Edit Metadata

This is driving me crazy. I know its here. I think

If you click on a book and select edit metadata individually it opens with two tabs. One is "Basic Metadata" The other is "Custom Metadata". Is there a way to tell Calibre that you do not want a specific custom column to appear on the Custom Metadata tab? I have a couple of custom columns that are taking up so much realestate there that I have to scroll on the first tab to hit "download metadata". It's annoying.

Thank you for your help.

Under Preferences=>Behavior choose either Compact Metadata or All on 1 Tab for the Edit Metadata (single) Layout option. I personally prefer All on 1 Tab but you may prefer Compact Metadata.

You can define the presentation order of custom columns in metadata edit via the Order of custom column(s) in edit metadata Tweak. But you can't exclude columns.

Don't understand - you wrote this

Which would seem to imply you have Preferences->Behaviour->Edit metadata (single) layout set to Default, in which case the Download button is on the "Basic Metadata" tab only - so I can't imagine how custom columns can hide the Download button. With the Default layout you would need a small display area or use large fonts to hide the button.

However, I can imagine that the button might 'disappear' with the All-on-1 Tab or Compact layouts

Unfortunately the Download button doesn't have a unique accelerator key, it shares 'alt/d' with three other columns IDs, Date and Published. If it had a unique accelerator you could use it and then press Enter. I have a vague memory that at time it was 'alt/w', but I may be misremembering.

I just double-checked again to be sure and using the Default option the Download Metadata button does, in fact, require scrolling down to get it. It appears just fine using the All-on-1-Tab or Compact layouts. It's possible it may have to do with how much screen real estate is available. I'm on a 17" set to 1154x864 at the moment.

You're right and I think the reason it stays there is that in those layouts the Download and its Config button are in the same 'zone' as the OK, Previous, Next and Cancel buttons.

I suspect the Download button wouldn't disappear from view if that was also true in the Default layout - hint, hint
