Kindle Rot
About a third of the bottom of my Kindle screen looks like it's been devoured by aliens. It has the quality of a virus attack, although there are no other manifestations except the disappearance of anything at the bottom third of the screen.

Broken substrate. Classic example.
It's a physical problem, not a software/firmware issue. Nothing to be done. |

Sorry for posting in the wrong place. Thanks for the reply, which seems very likely the correct explanation.

Yes, it's a physical problem. Things like this are usually (but not always) caused by either a jarring fall or some weight being placed on the screen. I've seen it on other devices.

wasn't there some work around people made, for something similar to this?
that the text didn't go to the 'bad' part of the screen? so in this case, only the top half of the screen would be used. or am i remembering something else incorrectly, ha |

@zxczxc: Yep, but that implies that the screen still be able to refresh, which I don't think happens with a broken substrate.

It depends *where* its broken (in relation to the ribbon cable). Portions of the screen where both the X and Y axis electrode grids still connect back to the row and column drivers and the drivers back to the cable can still be active.

I have an old K3 where the top half works fine. (The bottom half, of course, has weird gray patterns set in stone.) |

Its B.E.R. and it will irritate the *#*#* out of you every time you look at it, so use it for parts or risky software hacks.

Or caused by stray telepathic radiation from some unwitting passerby. What I mean is sometimes it can happen for no apparent reason at all. Try and prove it though...
