In iOS 8, iBooks has become a permanent app
Apple has pretty much declared war on every eBook publisher and ebook reader developer.
Sad times. ![]() |

Ugh! It looks like some of the features they've added to it are "organize books by series" and "auto-night mode". Family sharing includes iBooks purchases.

I've not gone with the beta program this time. I'll be interested to see how it develops. More interested in Health, TBH, and seeing which gadget/app developers actually use HealthKit for compatibility.

I disagree to a certain extent. Calendar is built in, but people use other calendar apps. The same can be said for browsers, email clients, to-do, and notepad apps. Podcasts used to play in the music app, but that didn't stop me from buying Downcast years ago. Now there will be those people who won't try other ebook apps, however I'd wager those people would stick with iBooks anyway since Apple prompts you to download it.
This really isn't surprising to me. The writing was on the wall when iBooks was baked into Mavericks. I'm more surprised they didn't bake it into iOS 7. I'm sticking with Marvin! I require way more from an eReader app than Apple will give me. I'm still using Downcast for the same reason. |

Yes, as an iOS user, I'm really not seeing how this affects me adversely in any way. I gather Apple aren't going out of their way to prevent users from installing Kindle/Kobo/Marvin/Goodreader/Cloudreaders/whatever on their devices?

Oh yeah, don't even bother installing the beta. The biggest issue being that iCloud is broken. You can't use it with anything but iOS 8 and OS X 10.10. Absolutely poor judgement on Apple's part on that (the requiring of 10.10).
The other thing is the crashing, which happens a lot on my 1st gen iPad Mini. But this time around I'm actually going to use it as a developer device. I've already gone through a few pages of the Swift guide. No way am I installing it on my other devices though. |

For simplicity, I've started using the built-in (Apple developed) apps as much as possible.
About the only exceptions are PocketCasts, the Bing search app, and Simplenote. I will note however that while I do use iBooks, I also have and use the Kindle app, Goodreader, Bluefire and Marvin. |

It's annoying that Apple won't let you delete an app you don't use, but that's already the case with others. I can't see this as a catastrophe, just a minor disagreement. But of course I'm still using iBooks myself.

I put all the apple apps I don't want in a folder called default and shove it on the last page. Then ignore it, I have about 10 apps in there so far.

I don't see a problem with this unless they change the terms of other 3rd party reading apps. Apple has a "Newsstand" app yet on my iPad I happily subscribe to magazines through the Zinio app instead.

PDF Reader ??
My NookST has been set aside and I use Marvin/iPadMini for all my EPUB's.
However, Marvin can't handle PDF's, and I have about 20 heavily illustrated reference books in PDF format on my Mini. I read them with iBooks and think it does a pretty good job. In lieu of iBooks, what PDF reader do you folks recommend? Thanks ... |
