What do you feel nostalgic for?

OK, for what do you feel nostalgic? What do you miss from the good ol' days, as they say?

Me, I miss seeing stars at night. When I grew up, the night was filled with stars and constellations, with the Milky Way painting a ghostly white band across the sky. Now all I see is a bright haze from reflected city light.

I miss cars that you can recognize.
I miss music that you can understand the words to.
I miss movies that don't drown out the words with music.
I miss butterflies.
I miss TV shows that were actually funny and TV shows that had a plot.
I miss a world that most people seemed to enjoy.
I miss a lot of things.

Stars, yes, I miss seeing the stars, but what I'd really like to see, as I was telling Norton just last night while taking him out in the back yard to do his business, is a pre-Thomas Edison sky. That must have been awesome.

I miss the sense of family being all in one place.

I miss the ice cream man, who came down the street every day on his tricycle outfitted with an ice box in the front to keep the treats cold. He never smiled, and seemed to be the saddest person on the planet, but we kids looked forward to him and his bicycle bell every day.

That's like a creepy horror book introduction. He didn't smile becuase those things are apparently atrocious to try to peddle around and kids don't tip. They could have fixed that with a nice bike trailer instead of the monstrosity they built.

Clear Fanta Cream Soda. Being able to buy my deoderant from a store in Canada since its not distributed here anymore.

I miss the bookmobile

I miss the tiny park with the WWI artillery piece badly painted silver, and the oh-so-climbable trees.

I miss my red plastic transistor radio - on which I listened to only 1 station: CKLW.

I miss running through soybean fields carrying a days supply of graham crackers and water in a tin canteen that had an unmistakable metallic taste.

Schwin bicycles with big shock absorber springs on the front fork and a horn button on the crossbar.

Soda fountains where they would squirt some Coke syrup into a glass and then add soda water.

Pizza by the slice for 15 cents.

Watching magic shows and really thinking it was magic.

Going away to sleep-away summer camp.

Me and Caroline Sherman, 8yrs old, sitting on the swings and talking for hours.

Me and Donna Medina, 16yrs old, up on the roof of the apartment house, not talking.

Skate keys and 45rpm record adapters.

Back seat of a '56 Chevy, watching the 'Submarine Races' while parked at the beach.

Saturday double features at the movies, with Movietone News, a 'Flash Gordon' serial episode, and 5 cartoons.

I'm nostalgic for:

...Mom's attending and proudly applauding all of my recitals, performances, and competitions (not to mention schlepping me to and from practice sessions and rehearsals, buying the necessary gear, and encouraging me to pursue my interests)

...hearing the distinctive purring engine of Dad's Opel rounding the corner and his one swift beep of the horn, signalling his returning home from work

...romping in our back yard with my brother, family dog, and whatever other kids happened to be visiting

...trying (always unsuccessfully) to stay awake late enough on Christmas Eve to chat with Santa Claus

...lying down, rolling around, or doing gymnastics in the grass, sans picnic blanket, without fear of ticks or lyme disease

...lying on the living room rug watching appointment TV (e.g., Dark Shadows, The Wonderful World of Disney, Lost In Space, Daktari, Peyton Place, Alfred Hitchcock) on my parents' newfangled color TV-stereo-cabinet contraption

...believing (for decades) my high school sweetheart was the bee's knees

...every pet I've ever had (R.I.P.)
