muki, an e-ink based photo mug

A Finnish coffee-maker presents an e-ink equipped mug capable of showing text and videos on its display and report the temperature of its content to the Bluetooth connected smartphone ( which is the source of the display images) The energy to power the electronical components is gained from the heat of the mug's filling. Release is announced for beginning of 2015. Video http://youtu.be/RlAQld4kx3M Want to try getting a test device? http://www.paulig.fi/kampanja/muki/index.php?lang=en P. S. I have no private or professional connection with the company or the development of the mug. Last edited by Freeshadow; 04-29-2014 at 01:22 PM. Reason: release date added |

I can't even believe how awesome this looks. E-ink, coffee and tech. I hope I get picked to be a beta tester (even though I don't blog about either coffee or tech :P) Thanks for the link Freeshadow. Last edited by AlbertaCowboy; 04-29-2014 at 12:08 PM. |

Too bad it likely wouldn't survive any time in the microwave (hot water for cocoa).

I want one of these! What if this is the start of a global trend toward re-purposing consumer waste energy?! We could be on the cusp of a real paradigm shift and I want in! ApK | |

How would it update the images? They talk about Instagram etc., yet without WiFi how will it get updates. Heat from hot coffee might power the eInk for a short time, but it won't power WiFi. If you have to plug this thing into your computer to update images, and avoid putting it into the microwave or even a dishwasher, then will it really have a market? I think it is a novel idea that will never make it to the market.

The applications of e-ink go beyond e-readers. It's a young technology, we haven't seen the end of it.

Neat idea, but I think the design is horrible. But my opinion may be tainted by that even worse youtube video. Why did they waste about two thirds of it showing completely unrelated stuff? I'd be more impressed if it were a simple mug with eink on it, not a designer whatever with an embedded display... |
