Warhammer
I have picked up my first warhammer book called Trollslayer and I would like to see what forum members think about warhammer in general.

Only Warhammer I know of is a video game that I played before. Is this the same brand?

The video games are set in the same Warhammer world found in the books.

The books are part of the Warhammer gaming world. Paper books are available from most online retailers and the ebooks are only available from the publisher, Black Library.
I've read a couple of the Gotrek and Felix books (Trollslayer and Skavenslayer). They were alright, but I'm more interested in Black Library's Warhammer 40K universe. Mostly grimdark fantasy/science fiction. Last edited by jgaiser; 05-05-2014 at 11:04 AM. |

I've read a lot of the WH40K books. Very enjoyable in a pulpy way. You can't go wrong with David Abnett on that side of Warhammer.
The only WH I've read is the Blackhearts Omnibus, which I enjoyed quite a bit. I've been curious about a few others, like the Gotrek and Felix series, and Malus Darkblade as well. Would welcome feedback on those if anyone has read those. |

I LOVED the Gotrek & Felix novels, but only those by William King. He stopped writing them after Giantslayer, and I thought the series just tanked afterwards.
Trollslayer, Skavenslayer and Daemonslayer were great! |

Look on youtube at the trailers for the games and for the Movie (animation.)
I love them. "We are steel and doom." "We know no fear." Last edited by frahse; 05-13-2014 at 12:25 AM. |

Carnak: [v.o] "It is the 41st Millenium. In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. The Emperor of Mankind wages a constant battle to protect humanity from the horrors of space. On the fringes of the Imperium, alien races lurk and plot, and chaos demons leak into our reality from the torment of the warp. All that stands in their way are the mighty Space Marines. They are more than mortal. They are steel, and they are doom. They are the champions of mankind. And the greatest of them all... are the Ultramarines."

The Warhammer games started off as a Miniature army game with lots of figures to paint. It's produced by Games Workshop http://http://www.games-workshop.com/
Thier more popular settings are Warhammer (High Fantasy) and Warhammer 40K (similar races but set a SciFi space setting) Since an extensive mythology was created around their different worlds there are now lots of books, tabletop RPGs, and computer/TV-games, there was even a quite good MMO but it's been closed now. My favorite was Bloodbowl, think American football in a brutal Fantasy setting. |

I was very much into Warhammer 40,000 as a teenager. It's a wonderfully dark and, at times, exceptionally violent universe with masses of background material that has been slowly developing since the late 80's. Think Tolkein, crossed with Star Wars, Aliens, H.P. Lovecraft and the worst excesses of medieval Europe and twentieth century totalitarian regimes, played out on a galactic scale. Wars can last centuries, involve billions of individuals and consume entire star systems.
I still read the books, although the quality varies enormously. Dan Abnett's work, as mentioned upthread, is very good indeed. He does proper characters, interesting plots and his action scenes are second to none. The Gaunt's Ghosts series are particularly good (Think the Sharpe books, but set in the far future amidst massive interstellar wars) Aaron Dembski Bowden's stuff is rather good as well. However, many of the books are rather cartoony in nature - no plot to speak of, just endless, dull fight scenes between characters that are little more more than ciphers. |
