updated book covers not showing in books

When I update the metadata and covers the new covers are not displaying in the books, they show on the cover preview on the right in Calibre but when I open the books it is still the old ones.

Unless you generate a new version of the book, the file is not modified. You should convert them or, if they are epub, you will be able to use ModifyePub plugin.

Or use the 'Polish Book' function, which is way faster than a full conversion.

And Modify EPUB does the same thing.

Of course, it's still better to use the built-in Polish (why install random extra stuff), which also handles AZW3.

I still use modify plug-in out of habit. you can untick all boxes except for add-delete cover, if you wish, so the "why install random stuff" is unfair

I use it more as an "uninstall" random stuff tool. I tick strip out adobe CSS crap , & remove broken TOC entries

I sai "install" random stuff, not "edit" random stuff. I was (obviously) referring to the unnecessaryness of the plugin itself.

If you already have it installed, there is no requirement to uninstall.

I myself installed it after I discovered Polish -- I wanted the expanded option set offered by modify.

The 'polish book' function doesn't update the existing epub, it creates a new one and renames the old one to ORIGINAL EPUB. Solved the problem though, thanks.

No program or tool will "update" the existing ePub; they will ALL create a new one. Some tools MIGHT be kind and save the old file as a backup.

This is controlled by each user via a tweak (Preferences - Tweaks). The default is as you describe it. If desired, you can alter that behavior. I have it set to create an original_epub when I convert from epub to epub but not to create the original_epub when I Polish a book.

Relevant tweak below.

not true - it all depends what settings you use. I have modify epub set to update existing file & not to create backup. does what it says on the tin !

No. If it was something simple like a text file, it could be updated, but this is actually a zip file. While it might appear to just update the file, strictly speaking it is creating a new role and dropping the old one.

if I "update" any file, than windows deletes the old copy & writes a new one.

So I don't understand your last post, sorry.

If I update some text in a book ( e.g. I change one letter of one word in one line ) - then save the update, that means - to the operating system - write what's in RAM to disc & delete previous version.

doesn't really matter whether that "book" is an epub(zip) or a word doc, or a text file ?

the difference becomes noticeable when the book is very big, or the computer is very slow.

if it's a

• zip. it will take time to rewrite the whole file.
• text/docx. it will be able make changes without rewriting the whole file - reducing time

are you claiming that windows is smart enough to rewrite 1/2 a file or 1/4 of a file ?

that's news to me and contradicts everything I thought I knew about file operations.

when I edit and save a word doc, windows should write new, update disc index, mark old space as available for rewrite.
it surely does not compute like this - that book was saved across four fragments on this (needs-a-defrag) disc, but the latest edits only affected fragments 2 & 4 , so lets just re-do those.....

Given that an average windows PC will replace a book file in approximately one blink of an eye, anyway- this could become a silly "how many angels on a pin" debate, and its relevence to calibre is diminishing...
