The best read cities in the US, 2014

Amazon just published their annual listing of the best read cities in the US over the past year and Alexandria, Virginia, tops the list.

http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix....680&highlight=

Also noted in the article:

Quote:
Inferno by Dan Brown was the best-selling book overall in Alexandria, Va., followed by Divergent by Veronica Roth and The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Divergent was the most-read book by Goodreads users in Alexandria.

While Alexandria, Va. bought the most books overall, Cambridge, Mass. bought the most print books, and Knoxville, Tenn. purchased the most Kindle books.

Seattle, Wash.--home to Amazon.com's corporate headquarters--made the biggest gain this year, jumping from the #13 spot in 2013 to #4.

Cambridge, Mass. continues to grow more budding entrepreneurs than any other city, ordering the most books in the Business & Investing category. Top titles include Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman and perennial best seller StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath.

Looking only at cities with more than 1 million residents, San Diego, Calif. is the most well-read.

Florida is on that list 5 times. I guess in a retirement state, people have more time to read.

Being an official oldster, I find it funny that very few of the young'uns at work read on ereaders or tablets. By far, they prefer DTBs. Even those who are tech oriented prefer DTBs. Go figure

Would these be books that they pass around to each other? DTBs provide a connection between people that electrons pushed through the tubes can't. I've found that these kinds of connections have gotten weaker for me as I age, so I wouldn't be surprised if the young are the ones most into book sharing (that and they have the least spare cash lying around).

Interesting observation, and yes; they frequently pass the book around. That's something I rarely did when I was young, because I mostly did library books.

I do have a Kindle that I loan to family and friends. They scan my library and I download the books they want to read.

Gulp, I live in Alexandria. Maybe this is proof I'm addicted to eBooks.

I had a (small tiny) circle of fellow workers that we lent books ( I always wanted mine back). The current terms don't allow sharing (even if only 1 person was reading the book at the moment).

TM I am not sure lending a device (with shared account) avoids violation. 2 Devices could open the same book at the same time.

I see no TOS problem with that . ( I don't use the Amazon sync/cloud, so I did not know)

Well, I'm a Florida retiree and I find that people of a certain age who read a lot now have always done so. It's just that there is a large population of readers in Florida.

When you say "oldsters", how old do you mean? Many of the older baby boomers(me) and those 10 years ahead of them have been dealing with tech throughout most(or at least a good portion) of their professional lives and retirement. The majority of oldsters who would really have issues adapting are the remaining Greatest Generation members, like my 93 year old father, with some degree of Alzheimer's or other health issues. When my mother died four years ago at age 87, she was still using her pc for shopping, on-line banking, email, scanning photo albums, word processing,etc.,etc.
