Lit format & windows 8
I hope someone may be able to give advice on a problem I have. I have always had Microsoft Reader installed on my computers in order to read a library I have of some 4000 ebooks in .lit format. In January this year I got a new computer with Windows 8 and the Microsoft Reader program installed OK even though it was an old copy....However fast forward to June this year and I bought a high end computer with i7 and all top specs BUT it will not let me install the Microsoft reader program no matter what I try. The older computer has been disposed of because it was too slow for some of my work. I am faced with the fact that if I cannot get it installed I will have to convert 4000+ books through Calibre - not a task I am looking forward to because of the time. Does anyone have info which could help me. I would appreciate hearing from you. Cheers. Berni

Install a virtual machine running an older version of Windows - Virtualbox is free or VMware...

Perhaps you should consider moving on. LIT has been abandoned by MS.
The VMWARE suggestion is excellent. Install windows 7 or XP and remove DRM on your books. You never know when MS will decide to kill the DRM servers. DeDRM and convert to ePub while you can. I lost books to exactly that situation a while back. Cheers Art |

As mentioned, .lit is an old and abandoned piece of ebook software.
Put calibre on autopilot and take the wife out for a romantic dinner and a movie (of her choice). You'll wake up the next morning in a new century. ![]() ![]() Don |

You don't have to convert all your 4000 books at once. Just convert them as you want to read them.

But there is no guarantee that in years to come that it will be as simple/possible to convert lit to epub. At any point in time your library should be in a currently supported format, which for now means epub, without DRM. That is safest for the long haul.

Windows 8 AND LIT
Thank you very much for your replies --- I will take your general advice on board and start converting the books through Calibre. I no longer read this genre but I am very reluctant to just dispose of them so I will start converting to epub and put them on a removable hard drive. Again thank you for taking the time to reply - this forum is a valuable source of info. Cheers. Berni

OT:
Berni, your post brought back memories!!!! I have to go digging for my beloved but abandoned iPaq 3870 (if I recall the number correctly) - they don't make devices like that any more ![]() |

I would recommend convert all the books to PDF or EPUB, MS has abandoned the .lit format, I'm afraid someday you will be not able to find a program to read your .lit books on every computer.

Not to PDF! PDF is an output format, not suitable for further conversions.

The simplest work around is to temporarily modify the registry where the installer checks whether the device is a tablet. You might have to change the permissions, but it should solve the issue.
_______________ Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\ Windows\Tablet PC] "IsTabletPC"=dword:00000000 |

Is it even there anymore? Or do you mean the MS/Nook app.

You might have to adjust the Compatibility in Properties. |
