embedding table of contents
hi everyone, i sure hope someone can help me...i've been having a hell of a time! i registered my ebook with bookbaby and they told me i needed to convert from pdf to epub, so i used a program online and submitted it to them, they told me it wasn't complete or correct-that the table of contents needed to be 'embedded', like a virtual table of contents that readers can use to navigate the rest of the book with...i had no idea how to do this...they suggested using calibre to do the convert so i did, but they said it still wasn't embedded...i have searched online, calibre help sections, tutorials, etc...i can't find anywhere how to do this...has anyone encountered this before? or knows how to do this? i don't want to pay bookbaby 100 to do the convert for me when i know there's a way i can do it on my own...or is there maybe another epub conversion program out there that does this?
thanks in advance... |

Did you try the ToC plugin in calibre? Or just convert it.

@katiusciad - Do you have the book in any format other than PDF - eg a word processing format, plain text or html. PDF is the worst of all formats to convert to EPUB (or any other ebook format).
If not you probably need to edit the EPUB itself - here's a link to the calibre book editor manual ==>> http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/edit.html You'll see there's a section in there re ToC's It looks a bit daunting at first, but if all you want to do is get a ToC then it should be fairly straightforward Ask any questions in the Editor subforum and you'll get plenty of help BR |

This was just discussed in the Editor forum here
![]() Specifically my answer here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2831291 Sounds like you want the ncx Table of Contents, sometimes called the Active ToC -- it is semantic and ereaders will use it to create a navigation menu. The builtin ToC Editor plugin can auto-generate these, but only as much as conversion would anyway. (You can also manually add entries and specify the location, but that is hardly "auto". ![]() You need properly defined Chapter headings for it to work --see the linked explanation. Good luck!
