Several EPUB at once?

Hello, the world! + @Kovid

The topic may be discussed elsewhere, but I couldn't find any trace of it.

I discovered that it is impossible to open a second EPUB while leaving a first one opened in the Editor (which would be very useful). In other terms, it is impossible to work a several EPUB at once.

-> Is this because I don't know the trick, or is this a limitation?

Thanks in advance.

Just open another instance of the Editor.

(I always open new books from main Calibre window, not from open book inside the Editor. In this way a new instance of the Editor is launched every single time. In fact you can have even the very same book open several times at once!!!

Of course, for this procedure you need the book you want to edit to be included in the Calibre Library. But adding books to the Library is in fact the very first step I do with any new book. I cannot think about having lone books in my system without being managed by Calibre. Even the true folder and name structure Calibre uses for storage is really wonderful and neat even for an outside-of-Calibre browsing session).

@DigitEditLab - You can only have one book open in any one instance of the editor, but in Windows and Mint, I at least, can have multiple instances of the editor running - YMMV

But if you can't then I suspect its a limitation of your OS or its configuration, I am not aware of any Allow only one instance setting in the editor itself

You can View additional files while editing.

Usually I am replicating a visual style, so I only need to view the model

If some of your need for comparison with another book, that is a feature already present under File, Compare to another book.

It seems like you might get into trouble if you have specific preferences, etc, which you might want with one book and not with another. They all refer back to the same preferences file, I think. Whether this is a real limitation, I don't know.

Thanks to all for your tips.

I should have said that I was considering the standalone version of the Editor. For production, this is more convenient than using the Library because I don't want (need) that my files being processed to be located/renamed in a central Calibre folder.

I will have another look today (this is the start of a new one in my time zone). Staying tuned...

There is no stand-alone version of the editor: it is part of and uses the whole of the calibre package.
However, you can always use (and start) it either independently from the calibre, or from within calibre.

What I meant by Standalone: to launch the Editor without the Library, which may be very convenient because there is no renaming, no storing in a dedicated folder...

I know that one can open/edit several EPUB from the Editor, but seemingly not from the Editor-which-I-call-Standalone.

Staying tuned...

I run Windows 7 64bit and I just went into explorer, right clicked a epub and used the Open with feature to open the book in calibre's Edit Book editor. I did this multiple times and now have several books opened in different instances of the editor.

Thanks: I will test it tonight (in 12 hours time) on my Windows 7 64bit. I guess it'll work.

Meanwhile (in daytime), I will test something alike on my Apple iOS Mavericks. When it works, I will inform the community...

Or just launch as many Editor entities as you want from the direct accesses you have in the Calibre group in the Start Menu. (Just tested and it works).

Thank you, @arspr, for your tip. I will test it later on my Windows 7 64 bit.

@all: Meanwhile, I've just found something on my Mac (Mavericks)... I duplicated the "terminal", and launched in each of them the following command /Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOS/ebook-edit
It works, thus I have now 2 different EPUB opened enabling me to switch from one to another (eg. to copy/paste some stuff).
