android pro quick guide apps: html5, CSS, regex...

Has anyone tried these & can vouch for accuracy etc.

they are cheap little apps at Google play & amazon stores ( maybe at apple stores also)

I bought the HTML5 one, am considering buying a full set of the ones that are relevant to ebook work, but there's a lack of reviews at amazon...

having a reference guide on a tablet could be handy when working at PC & saves flipping in & out of Sigil to google a hint....

Ditto...but shouldn't this be listed in deals/freebies?

Well I'm interested in the usefulness of those guides for ebook editiing, which I do in sigil

correct me if I am wrong but aren't ebubs based on HTML5 & CSS.

Sigil makes great use of regex for which there is also a pro quick guide ( which may or may not be the right flavor of regex.... )

so I was really seeking feedback on relevance, accuracy, completeness... not on value for money.

No. ePub 2 is based on XHTML 1.1 and CSS 2.01 with some variation. ePub 3 is using HTML5 as a base but continues to require XML style case and closing tags. It supports a subset of CSS 3. It also supports Javascript which is not supported in ePub 2. See our wiki for more details.

I didn't mean to offend, just thought that sharing this in the other forum would gain the attention of more users that may use other editor as well as sigil.

confession time : I din't know that other forum existed !

I am happy for mods to relocate it to whatever they think best.

my 2nd choice would have been the calibre editor forum as that is the other tool I use frequently.

I am a tad confused by the choice of both CSS and CSS3 guides, as to which is more applicable to epubs ?

I stand corrected, but basic HTML5 code will work, I assume, so long as I avoid new features that are not in the epub 2 spec.

I am wanting to learn how NOT to use the now-deprecated tags that are in HTML4, so learning to code to the newer standards seemed a more future-proof strategy.

So is that HTML5 is stricter & richer than XHTML which is stricter than HTML4 ?

I have a (very) old personal web page built with Microsoft Front Page ( that dates it ! ) , full of crud code that you are not supposed to use any more. like tags for <big>, <font>, <center>...

Yes, html5 is still mostly html. Most things in html4 work ok as it supports CSS and Html 3 is worse as it did not. xhtml 1.1 does not violate html4 rules but requires things that are optional in html4. The big thrust in html5 is to support audio/video and fancy scripting. epub 2 does not support any of these constructs. Sigil is a good ePub 2 editor so using it will be fine.

thanks. I picked up one error already in the css guiide:
the stuff on widows and orphans says that the correct term is windows & widows
"widows" id not anywhere in the guide text.
they even give an example
p {
windows: 3
}
and explain how that sets a 3 line minimum!

It was wrong in the free version so I thought, OK maybe they only fix /update the pro version. So I rashly pay for pro version , only to see the same error!

that is the sort of thing that makes me distrust a tech reference publisher.

I have emailed the developer & will see how they respond before buying any more of the series. with an app, as opposed to a print book, there's no excuse for not sending out a rapid update.

update: good quick response from the developer...

So sorry about the errors. I appreciate you pointing them out. Please let me know if you find any others.

I will make the fixes tonight and try to get the new versions up within the next day or so.

Aloha...

if he delivers on that, I will feel much better about buying more of his guides

here's their latest link for programming references apps at google store ( I got mine from amazon store though)
