Stripping Affiliate Information from a URL
I just ran across a one-click $10 credit for Audible that I want to post on this forum. It requires the person to visit a certain webpage (the website does not appear to be malicious--i just went to it a few minutes ago, clicked on the link for the offer, and was taken to the Audible page where a $10 credit almost instantly appeared). I need to find out 1) how to recognize if there is affiliate information embedded in the URL, and 2) if there is, how to strip the affiliate information, so I get a "clean" URL and post the URL with the promotion on this forum. Thanks.

I need to know this too! I accidentally posted an affiliate link the other day (from BookBub).

It depends on the site. Usually there is some sort of "ref=" thing at the end.
ie: amazonDOTcom/Flat-Stanleys-Worldwide-Adventures-Rushmore-ebook/dp/B0026772MO/?_bbid=11229&tag=bookbubemailc-20 You just delete the red and bold and you get a clean link. Usually for kobo and B&N I don't bother with that because it's actually easier to search for the book name manually. Last edited by peachiekene; 04-27-2014 at 04:13 PM. |

It would have been better if I had made my post on the audiobook deals thread, but I forgot about its existence. Sorry.
Anyway, it is nice to find out a little bit about affiliate information within an URL. I, too, have accidentally posted an URL with affiliate information. Most of the time now, which is when I am posting a book or book sale deal, I make sure that I have a "clean" URL by doing a search on the website for the book or book sale, copying the resulting URL from the address box (there's a proper name for it, but I've forgotten what it is), and then pasting it into my post. Maybe this is unnecessary effort based on peachie's information. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-27-2014 at 06:25 PM. |

For Audible, the affiliate tag generally is this form:
&source_code=AVSOR9006WS102813 Note that some offers are tied to the affiliate (large sites, usually), so stripping it out may make the link invalid. |
