Error installing 1.31 64-bit
See the attached screenshot for the error during the install. The program did seem to work properly afterwards though. I did update to Win 8.1.1 yesterday, in case it's relevant, because I never encountered this before.

If, as you say, Calibre is working ok I wouldn't worry about it. Windows 8 has a good reputation for sorting issues out for itself.
If it turns out that there is a continuing problem installing Calibre updates and other new applications then it would appear there may a permissions problem to the folder mentioned or the account used. But, for myself, I would not worry about this unless you have an ongoing problem. But for the sake of good housekeeping and good order, after the new 8.1 update did you reboot the PC before you installed the Calibre update (I know the update reboots the PC 1 or more times itself, but did you take it upon yourself to do another)? Also, after installing new update to 8.1 did you do another manual check for updates? Depending on the version of 8.1 you will likely get another couple of updates to add to those just installed, their installation being dependant on the existence of the previous ones. I doubt any omission of these would have resulted in the message you got, but mention it just from a housekeeping point of view. Last edited by AnotherCat; 04-09-2014 at 04:56 PM. |

I did get all the updates, including today's, and did all the reboots and a couple more. Windows 8.1 is weird about admin rights and so I've "taken ownership" of about everything, although I've never shown any errors with calibre before.
Btw, it would be nice if during the install there was that typical "add icon to desktop" choice box. My calibre icon is renamed and so each install adds a new one. Thanks, |

Note, I have not tested this as I have 1.31 installed already so can only test by uninstalling and reinstalling (with it installed already one gets the repair, change, etc options type window). |

@highstream - To avoid having a shortcut on the desktop, click the Advanced button on the License agreement dialogue and deselect it
What do the permissions settings look like on that registry key, I've attached mine (Win 7), I don't think this stuff has changed much, if at all. ![]() BR Last edited by BetterRed; 04-09-2014 at 07:15 PM. Reason: added light bulb para |

Yeah, you're right, it must be in the custom option, although the standardized phrasing of the choices is a bit strong and confusing: "Entire feature will be unavailable" (permanently, temporarily? - I assume the latter). The thing is with most programs the desktop icon option, along with others, gets its own screen during the install, rather than being behind a "custom install." In the case of the icon, that makes sense because most installs will not be the first.

![]() ![]() The update this week for Win 8.1 was a major one, from memory about 800MB for 64 bit and 500MB for 32 bit versions of Pro (those MBs included some small Office ones though) and forced several restarts so not much room for missing anything there. |

Odd that the permissions are not inherited - not that that should make any difference
But otherwise it looks the same, SYSTEM and Admins have Full Control and Users have Read. The only use calibre makes of the registry relates to un-installing it, and probably reinstalling it. And that's done by the Trusted Installed program, not by calibre itself. I'm not sure what sequence things happen, but I suspect the files are copied first before the registry entries are updated. That Folders key appears to contain a 'composite' index of everything that Windows thinks is in the Program Files and Program Files (X86) folders. FWIW I appear to have ~65+ values for calibre in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ins taller\Folders, the first and last entries are Code:
Name: C:\Program Files\Calibre2\ Name: C:\Program Files\Calibre2\resources\viewer\mathjax\jax\output\SVG\fonts\TeX\Typewriter\ Re the icon - what you see is pretty much what you see for any MSI install that uses its 'Product Features' facility. What you select/deselect in there is permanent until you change it, so if in 6 months time you decide you'd like a desktop shortcut, you can change it at the next install - or in a Repair (I think). @AnotherCat, if you use a code block spaces should not be added. For anything where exact copy-pasting or character representation is desired, you should be using [code].

AC, not sure what you're saying (maybe not to me?). Are you suggesting going through and resetting permissions for each item?

It was quickest to on this occasion to just try a couple of edits and when they failed to add a quick note which I would have expected clarified what was intended. Ordinarily I would have gone on to the alternative of snipping the permissions window or otherwise fixed the text had I had the time. |

If there are any further ramifications of your problems I wouldn't expect you won't see them until you install version 1.32. I discovered something else that's interesting - in HKLM\..../Folders registry key I found references to the 64 sub-folders within in the Program Files\Calibre2 folder. However, there are 80 sub-folders in Program Files\Calibre2 folder. I'm not sure on what basis the Trusted Installer creates those registry entries, I assumed it was based on the presence of the sub-folders. No, none of the sub-folders folders are empty. I'm not inclined to spend any more time on it, even though I did find a 'cute' program for listing and extracting the content of .msi files - Less Msiérables ![]() BR Last edited by BetterRed; 04-10-2014 at 05:50 PM. |
