Public Service Announcement: Saved Searches are here

As of an hour ago, calibre now has saved searches. This brings us one step closer to feature parity with Sigil!

For anyone running calibre from source, you can update git and use it now, otherwise you will have to wait for the next release, due early tomorrow.

Kovid,
+1 dito.

One question, do you somewhen plan to make an import/export for saved searches?

I am think about something similar to your book conversion in the section Search and Replace (and perhaps a possibility to combine this searches the same way )

You can combine the searches just select multiple items by holding ctrl or shift while you click. I'm not sure what the point of import/export would be. Just put all your searches in one place and use the filter.

For example, say you have searches related to headers and footers. Then put the word hdr/ftr in the name for all the searches and simply type hdr/ftr in the filter to see only those searches.

Hi Kovid,
Sorry, I am using the wrong words (sometimes not easy for me). I mean to save and load a search into a file like you do it for S&R in conversion. I can safe my searches in *.csr files, what is realy helpfull i.e. with different PDF conversions where I need to do steps in the correct order to have a good output. It will be nice to have a similar thing in Edit Ebook. It is as well nice for import my existing calibre searches in the editor. But this only is a nice to have. I am quite happy with your implementation.

Using filter and multible items is good idea to do this in an other way. I didn't recognize this. Thanks.

Can the saved searches be invoked by a right click menu listing instead of having to go up to the search menu?

Thanks for this feature. I have to tread the PDF pounding ground over and over again and this will save endless copying.

If you use it a lot, I suggest assigning a keyboard shortcut to it. You can bring it up by right clicking the search boxes find or replace bars and selecting save current search and then clicking cancel.

Many of my saved searches (and other Calibre Templates) started here at MR.

Having an import eliminates errors in transferring 2 (many times) line containing a complexity of symbols
Transferring them to other systems (if the searches exist as a separate file in the configuration folder, this usage would be moot)

Unless people are planning to share large numbers of search/replace expressions, surely copy/paste is a perfectly reliable method?

Wow.

Nevertheless, I feel there are some "strange" things, although they will be possibly perfect coherent design decisions so I prefer asking them. I also update a screenshot to clarify the questions.
  • Why Saved Searches are just restricted to regex ones? I mean, obviously regex ones are much more suited for this feature but would it be difficult to add support for normal ones? (Maybe, they could be useful in certain situations, or for entry basic users).
  • The location, direction and wrap options are logically not saved. But I think it's pretty strange that they are not synchronized with the "normal" search toolbar. Why? I mean, of course there can be situations in which this double setting could be useful, but I really think that in most cases it's going to be extremely confusing.
  • I would also prefer a direct access (without tricks) from right context menu. A veeeeeery minor desire.
  • Alt+R is used in Replace and Remove search. And it doesn't do anything but toggle the focus between both buttons.
  • Count All is Alt+C while in normal editing is Ctrl+N. Wouldn't Alt+N be more logical?
  • Why do we have a Count All button here but not in the normal toolbar? I think I remember something about being "impossible" to add. Another veeeeery minor desire.
  • Wouldn't a "Copy to Search toolbar" button/link/whatever method be useful in the Saved Searched dialogue? (I mean the opposite method from the "Save current search" option).
  • In the lower part of the dialogue you have the Find and Replace info of your selected Saved Search. But no info is shown about Case or Dot all options, and it could be really important.

That's what usually happens. Kovid codes something new and great and then EVERYBODY wants even more. Life is hard, Kovid.

If you wish to transfer your settings, including saved searches, from one computer to another, simply copy the tweak_book_gui.json config file in the calibre config folder.
