Supporting Metadata
Are there any readers that support reading metadata? Or software that I could use on a rooted reader? I've been using Calibre, and now find the "Collection" concept very limiting.
I want my ratings to appear on my ereader, as well other tags. Most metadata in mp3s use ID3, but what is the name of the metadata edited in Calibre, is it just called metadata? Are there any standards like with mp3s? |

The metadata fields are predefined. You can't repurpose them. The reader generally displays what metadata it wants to, such as author, title, etc. Many metadata fields are not supported by any reader that I know of. There is no way to make the reader do so. That would require a firmware change, including a UI change.

You can embed a book jacket into the book with calibre. It will contain all the metadata as a page in the book, so all readers will support it.
It's the next best thing to writing a firmware update yourself and modding the device. ![]() |

Well this is a shame. I want to be able to rate a book in my ereader, among other things. It seems like a natural thing to want to do, I don't understand why metadata support is so limited. Hopefully there will be some progress soon.

tablet apps, like Marvin for iOS or Calibre Companion for Android, may have these options. I believe both of the aforementioned examples do in fact have that capability.

I don't recall seeing a rating in the metadata, at least for a .mobi file. It could be something that is only in Calibre.

A possibility is to use collections. You should be able to create a collection based on the rating stored in calibre. |

My current system is to have five collections named "one star" etc. After reading a book, I place it in the desired collection, and then later add the rating to Calibre. This is obviously very cumbersome. Especially when you have to wade through the entire library, just to select the book so you can add it to the collection.
This is one of the main reasons why I don't like collections. Why can't you add a book to a collection while inside the book? In the Nook, there's a "more" area that only goes to a page with the book's details. I'd like to see some notes management capabilities, the option to add to a collection and add tags. Basic stuff that would make things more usable imo. There isn't even a search feature inside collections. Are my expectations too much? I don't know how people with hundreds of books cope. As my library grows, I'm getting frustrated by the limitations of the Nook and ereaders generally. I didn't want to root my Nook, but I will if I can find better software. If anyone can recommend an app that would fill these needs, I'd be grateful. Thanks for pointing to the wiki, it's been useful. |
