Temporary Files left behind by Calibre
I have been trying to clean up my computer... and one of the things that showed up was ... many folders/ files left by Calibre ... for years. Does caliber need any of these temp folders/files? There are none that I see from my current version. Your assistance is appreciated.

@Mebird - If you're using Windows Vista or later there's a Disk Cleanup tool that will get rid of the crud programs leave in the Temp folder, calibre is one of the least worst programs. Browsers & image editors are are among the most worst. If you pin Disk Cleanup Tool to your Start Menu it will serve as a reminder to run it occasionally. The tool will also cleanup remnants from Windows Updates.
You can give calibre a 'private' temporary folder see http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/cust...ment-variables If you spot something that's repeatable lodge a bug report and Kovid will fix. I find that what's most often left behind is empty folders and subfolders. I have excluded both the AV and the Content Indexer from scanning calibre's 'private' temporary folder. Calibre never ends abnormally, it doesn't run in the tray, and I dont run the server. So its none of the 'usual suspects' ![]() BR Last edited by BetterRed; 02-27-2014 at 04:44 PM. |

All windows versions have some flavor of that tool. running it with as much as possible shut down gives the best results. |

![]() Yep, best run when least proggies running. If you ruin [sic] it as admin you can remove Service Pack backups and they are big. Means you can't backout the SP but when did you ever wanna do that. There's a good reason to keep a clean disks on later Windows, because Windows now does on the fly defrag on spinning disks, the more free sectors the better. Different on SSD of course - deleting things on them wears them out <joke, sort of> BR Last edited by BetterRed; 02-27-2014 at 07:12 PM. |

It is an easy program program to use and will remove files from temp, internet cache, history, cookies and the recycle bin with two clicks....
The latest version can be downloaded from http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner |

There's also a way to add support for literally any other program, using the .ini file here for popular rules: http://www.winapp2.com/downloads.html |

I know what ccleaner is, I've had it since it was called crap cleaner.
I also provide IT support to folks who i would never suggest use ccleaner. If I did then tomorrow they'd be calling to ask where's my browsing history, all my recently used file have gone from my image editor etc. Its not absolutely necessary, and for most people the less software they have the safer they'll be - says he who has more gadgets and whizz bangs than he can poke a stick at. No offence to the OP, but I judged it would be better if he/she used the simplest tool available - i.e. the built in one. BR |

As you know those things will only happen if you don't configure it properly... Likewise many of my clients have used it for many years without such issues....

I bet you configure it, and give them some guidance on usage, and they are using the computer to run a business - or they use a computer in their work.
I find its often better not to overload people with unnecessary software, especially those who never use(d) a computer in their job, or have limited formal education. They probably won't keep it up to date, and given that these things call home they are vulnerable to being exploited. YMMV - But I would rather keep things as simple as I can. BR |
