On the Kindle home page, they clearly state "Includes free wireless access to the planet's most exhaustive and up-to-date encyclopedia—Wikipedia.org." However, if you look at the terms of use and policies pages, and in particular the "license agreement and terms of use" at http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...deId=200144530
Quote:
Wireless Connectivity

General. Amazon provides wireless connectivity free of charge to you for certain content shopping and acquisition services on your Device. You will be charged a fee for wireless connectivity for your use of other wireless services on your Device, such as Web browsing and downloading of personal files, should you elect to use those services. We will maintain a list of current fees for such services in the Kindle Store. Amazon reserves the right to discontinue wireless connectivity at any time or to otherwise change the terms for wireless connectivity at any time, including, but not limited to, (a) limiting the number and size of data files that may be transferred using wireless connectivity and (b) changing the amount and terms applicable for wireless connectivity charges.
Note: "you will be charged a fee for wireless connectivity for your use of other wireless services" and "We will maintain a list of current fees for such services".

I searched the Kindle store for a list of current fees and can't find any. They may be there but difficult to find. Or, perhaps they will appear there at some time.

Oh yeah -- I forgot to include:
Quote:
Your Conduct. You agree you will use the wireless connectivity provided by Amazon only in connection with Services Amazon provides for the Device. You may not use the wireless connectivity for any other purpose.
I, for one, would like a clear definition of exactly what constitutes "Services Amazon provides for the Device" and what would be "any other purpose".

And, ironically, one of the best sellers in the Kindle store has been How to Use the Amazon Kindle for Email & Other Cool Tricks: Read and Answer Email Anywhere, Anytime on the Amazing Amazon Kindle (The Amazing Amazon Kindle) by Stephen Windwalker.

Amazon does not currently charge a fee for accessing the web with the Kindle. They may well do so at some point in the future.

There is that 10 cent fee for converting files via your Kindle email. I can't think of any others.

Amazon makes a distinction between access to Wikipedia.org, which is free, and general web access which is currently free but might be charged for in the future. So far as I know, the only current access charge is $.10 per e-mail attachment delivered wirelessly to the Kindle.

As usual with these agreements, Amazon can always screw Kindle owners any time they want. So far they are not doing so.

Amazon took $100 of the $400 you paid for your Kindle and invested in big oil, you won't have to pay any fees ever *

* pure speculation on my part

Expecting to get free, unlimited internet access forever from a $400 device is slightly unrealistic, IMHO . To call charging for such a service "screwing" users is, however, somewhat unjustified when Amazon tell you up front about it.

The agreement allows Amazon to terminate Whispernet completely at any time and also to charge for "free" Wikipedia.org access, but so far they have not done so (obviously). Like all such agreements, it allows Amazon to screw with its customers if they want to, but usually what actually happens is much more benign that what could happen.

I agree that the current free unlimited access isn't likely to last if many Kindle users actually use it heavily, and it would be reasonable for Amazon to institute charges for general web access.

Actually, putting in a WiFi radio would be a good way to deal with the folks that can't get Sprint signals and for people outside of the US. They could make a deal with AT&T or T-Mobile for free WiFi access on their hotspots for buying books and using Wikipedia.
