Possible to hack a remote through T|E USB port?

I spend a lot of time listening to audio books on my Tungsten E. The only bad thing is when I have to pause when someone wants to talk or the phone rings and I have to fumble it out. I want to build a remote that goes into the mini USB port that I can hang out of my pocket or clip to my shirt or something. I can do the hardware, no problem, but I don't know anything about the interface to the Palm. Can anyone point me in a direction, or just shoot this down if it's not possible?
