What the heck? Pw2 updated itself by itself.
Put down my pw2 for a few minutes and it was rebooting when I came back. I thought hmm why is it rebooting. Then saw message your kindle is updating, do not turn off. What the heck?
The weird thing is I had connected to wifi but very briefly, almost certainly not enough time to download a 100M+ file. I had to spend an hour putting back all my hacks and patches. If it'd been on vacation without access to my PC, I would have been royally p.o'ed. Really, there's no real reason for amazon to update my kindle like this without asking me. Not like it's an always connected device with dangerous security exposure. I installed the backdoorlock hack. Hopefully, that'll put an end to this. |

It's probably been slowly downloading for a long time. But this is entirely normal for Kindles. Update has always been automatic.

Thats really quite common, my windows 7 and 8 PCs do that and my Mc Affee Anti-Virus does that as well.

Interesting.
However decent software always asks for permission before updating itself. My OS does. |

The thing is, it is impossible to prevent Kindle from updating itself, unless you hack it or make sure there is no enough space on the device.
And sometimes you know in advance that an update will bring an unwanted feature (such as patching a hole you want to use for jailbreaking) An OS might be set to update itself by default, but you can usually override this somehow. With Kindle you can only hopelessly watch as it does what it wants. |

There are settings in Windows to make the OS ask before updating, I do not think that the paperwhites have this option. Personally I like this ability to get house keeping operations done without my intervention and only get me involved when there is something wrong.
