How to remove margins?
A friend just bought a new Aura HD - and if I can work out some of the problems, I will get one as well.
Problem 1 - cannot seem to make the text almost touch the borders of the screen. ie remove or minimise the margins. I have set the margins to the lowest setting, and I am using the default font. The margins are still huge (to my mind). Also, at the bottom is the huge 'Page 1 of 300'. This is a total waste of space. I don't mind having the page number, but it takes up WAY too much space. Looks like 3 or 4 lines. Problem 2 - it is hard to see the screen when you turn it on. I always have to adjust the screen lighting to around 90%. Which is ok - but when I turn it off, it does not hold this setting. Is there someway to save this brightness setting? Problem 3 - I am left handed. By default if you click the left of the screen, you page back, the right hand side you page forward. I cannot do that, so it makes it very hard to read one handed (impossible?). Is there some way I can alter it to work left handed? Apart from these problems, it looks like a pretty good ereader. I currently use a Pocketbook 302, which is brilliant. The Aura is a lot faster, I have to admit, but Kobo can learn a lot from Pocketbook in the software area. |

The Kobo will respect the settings within the book with regard to margins (and line spacing). You will need to strip these in Calibre (or by hand-editing) if they're hard-coded.
The space at the bottom may be partially because of the default widows and orphans setting which can create a larger space at the bottom under certain conditions. Again, you can adjust this within the book - check the forum using those keywords for specific instructions. Not sure about it not holding the brightness setting, as I've not seen that before (except with the 1% light bug, which doesn't apply) - that sounds like a glitch to me. You may have to reset in order to fix it? Check your Reading Settings: you can adjust tap zones in various ways. |

Check reading settings for Page Turning option.
Rather than turning off, if you leverage a sleep cover, then when th cover is opened the device will wake from sleep and restore the light to the setting it had when the sleep cover was closed. |

There was a bug in a firmware version or two where the light level wasn't saved correctly. I think that was 2.10.0 and 3.0.x. It has been fixed in 3.1.1 and later. So, make sure you have the latest firmware version.

#1 Apart from the gap at the bottom the text does go right to the edges with a margin of 0 so as mentioned above if you're seeing otherwise it's something that the book's creator has felt necessary to set for some reason (legtimate or otherwise)
#2 Not normal behaviour, while the light won't re-light itself automatically it does remember the brightness setting. #3 As well as the options in reading settings you can also use tablet-style swipes to go back and fourth. These work at any point on the screen and the direction you swipe determines which way you go. |

Do you really need the sleep cover? On the Glo and Aura, without a sleep cover, (and the Aura HD, I think), when I sleep/wake the light level is remembered.

No the sleep cover is not needed but it does make it easier. Do remember though that if the device sleeps via the timer that the light is not restored.

If you are the adventurous sort you can patch the Kobo firmware to reduce the size of the bottom menu, amongst other things. See here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=231704.

i have gotten used to the bottom menu /page number space, but once you are past the 1st page of any chapter, then it looks strange to have no space at top of the page yet lots at the bottom. is there a simple way force a more aesthetic page top margin ?
the margin controls only affect left + right, not top + bottom ? |

Unfortunately not. You need to adjust the top margin in the CSS.

surely it's a @page settting, not a margin-top setting , unless that goes in the body CSS ? |

Kobo Glo works nicely with all the books I have purchased but Bookeen Cybook Opus usually tends to have no margins at all (due to the styles in epub file) so I always edit the EPUB files with Sygil and add the following line to the very top of the .CSS file that is being loaded on each page:
@page { margin: 10pt 7pt 10pt 7pt; } This will give me nice margins for the Cybook reader. I have these same settings in the book on my Kobo Glo and it seems nice. I hate having text right next to the border as I am used to having margins in pbooks as well. Thus I want some margins on all four sides. |

Yes, you can do it by adding it via the driver. And as GeoffR and arturg pointed out, doing it using via an @page will work. One of the things that the driver does with the CSS tweaks is to strip any existing @page from the CSS if there is one in the tweak file.
