Tablet device for e-books? Which one?

Hey guys, I've got a Sony PRS-T2 and while it works great on .ePub format books it's really hard for me to read .pdf files.

I want to buy a tablet device, but I don't know what makes a good tablet device a good e-book reader. I guess having a decent sized screen is important? Battery life doesn't matter for me because I'll be using it inside most of the time.

However, it's really important for me to be able to highlight passages and be able to store these highlights some place. On the PRS-T2 I came up with a perfect system which I outlined here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=225769

Is there any way I can use this system on a tablet device?

Please help me!

Good plan, if you have no choice but to read PDFs.

You might think so, but I've been surprised by my iPad Mini Retina. Because of the terrific resolution and my myopic eyes, I can read tiny text just fine. Your eyesight may vary; I suspect the average person would prefer a full-sized tablet. Whatever you are thinking after your research, do please get hands and eyes on before you make a final decision.

This depends more on the app you use, rather than on the exact tablet. I don't use highlights/annotations extensively, but those that do often seem to recommend my preferred PDF reader app, Goodreader. You can read a bit about the highlighting features here:

http://www.goodiware.com/gr-man-view-pdf.html#annots

Hopefully some others who are more experienced with these features might happen along for you.

Alright, thanks for your reply.

Is it possible to mimic the behaviour of Evernote on the PRS-T2 on the tablet?

I don't know how Evernote behaves on a PRS-T2, but you can install Evernote on a tablet.

What makes a tablet device a good e-book reader? A good, high resolution screen, and fast enough processor.

I have experience with these as e-book readers, and recommend them -

1. The Nexus 7 (2013 version). High res, high quality.

2. Nook HD 7. High res, high quality, budget price, SD card slot.

3. Kindle Fire HD 7 (2013 version). High res, high quality, budget price, but not as versatile as the others.

I enjoy reading on all three. I usually use the Moon+ Pro reading app, which is highly customizable. Good dictionary support.

I prefer the 7" screen for reading on. I don't, however, read PDFs. For that you might want to investigate the Nook HD+, the ipad, or perhaps the Kindle Fire 8.9".

I use the Nexus 7 (2012 version) which seems pretty good to me. I was considering getting a 2013 version, how much actual difference would I notice?

I don't have any experience with the Nexus 7 2012. However, as I recall, the Nook HD has a higher res screen than that one. I have read many comments from people stating that the 2013 edition is superior to the 2012 edition.

I got mine with a coupon from staples for $50 off, so keep an eye out in case they do that again.

Thanks. I guess the best thing to do will be to get into a shop and have a look myself.

$50 off isn't going to help me here in the UK

The iPad Retina Mini makes a superb reader. I'd recommend it.

Oh, sorry, didn't look at your location.

As Harry says, take a look at the ipad Mini....good screen size. I wouldn't mind having a tablet with that ratio, but they aren't usually in the budget price category

No, unfortunately the iPad Mini is not cheap. It is, however (IMHO) worth the money. I've had mine for three months now and it gets used for 2-3h every day. If budget is an issue, it's hard to beat the 2013 Nexus 7.

This should have been my first post:
I'm wanting to buy my first tablet device to use mainly for reading .pdf e-books. I also need to be able to highlight quotes from inside e-books and then upload them some place in the cloud or on the device so that I can review the quotes at a later date.

I've been using a Sony PRS-T2 e-book reader and this works perfectly for me for .epubs because I can highlight quotes from e-books and then upload it to Evernote.

Could someone please help me?

I can't quite figure out whether you require a PDF reader that exports highlights directly to Evernote (difficult to find), or just any PDF reader with some sort of method to export highlights (many of them). Once you have your highlights extracted, you can put them into Evernote yourself, surely?

Here's a comparative review of Goodreader, iAnnotate, and PDF Export, from someone with a similar workflow to yours. It may help.

Hey, thanks a bunch for your reply.

It doesn't have to be Evernote, just as long as I can upload the quotes some place...

I'm wanting to buy an Android device. Does Apple have an awesome app that can do what I want?
