First Ereader
Hi,
I'm really looking for my first ereader. I'm looking for something that can handle ebooks as well as pdfs as well. I'll be reading textbooks and novels on it. I'm looking for physical buttons on the ereader, as well as a touch screen function (would make looking up words and highlighting much easier), would be great if it's cheap too, my budget is 60$ without audiobook support and 85 with it. I've considered the PRS T3 by Sony as well as the SimpleTouch. The T3 has poor support for textbooks and seems really tacky to zoom in. The Nook products on the other hand are not available anywhere in Canada, and import/shipping fees make it over 90$. The audio book is optional ![]() Really looking for an ereader, not a tablet. |

You're Canadian and you aren't considering a Kobo?
![]() As far as I can see, the PRS-T3 is the only current touch screen ereader with buttons. I haven't tried one, but my understanding was that Sony's support for PDF was about the best on the 6" e-ink ereaders. The Sony's do PDF reflow which can improve things. Looking at the specs, the SimpleTouch wouldn't be that good. The screen is only 600*800 whereas the T3 is 758*1024. The clarity of the higher resolution screen will be an advantage. You should also consider the Kobo devices. The Glo and Aura are 6" with 758*1024. The Aura HD is 6.7" with 1080*1440. The extra size and resolution can help with PDF. All three of these ereaders are frontlit which improves the display even in reasonable well lit areas. I have a Glo. The PDF display is good, but, the size of the screen makes it impractical except for PDFs that are designed for small pages. For larger pages, you can zoom, but that make navigation harder. |

about kobo
I looked into the kobo glo as well as touch but the thing is, the lack of physical buttons is a real deal breaker for me.

The forced cover on the t3 seems tacky. Also there are reports of ghosting issues. But really, it's mostly the forced cover that bothers me.
Edit I found the t3s without the cover I think I'll go with that one. Thanks a lot guys. Last edited by AlotWarrior; 02-19-2014 at 05:07 PM. |

The only way you are going to easily be able to read pdf files is on a large screen, such as an iPad, which doesn't have buttons.

This, assuming they're A4 or similar formatted PDFs. (Or something like the Kindle DX, which does have buttons). But there is nothing that meets all of your criteria. Which are you prepared to compromise on?

Really, the audio book support isn't important. I really don't want a tablet, the eye strain caused by lcds is too much.

I don't even know what you could get for that price that has half-decent PDF handling (obviously, you're not going to get decent PDF handling). Possibly an old phone or iPod Touch, if the buttons requirement is flexible and the price could be tweaked a little.
