Moving Adobe Digital Editions to new HDD

We bought a new Hard Drive with more room on it and I'm moving all my ebooks and music to the new drive which is much larger (and the old drive is also the boot drive, so we are expecting an improvement in speed once we do this).

I've successfully moved Calibre and iTunes and I've copied over the Adobe DE folder (but have not yet deleted the original). Does anyone know how to point ADE to the new location?

Thx

ADE hardcodes the location of the My Digital Editions folder, you cannot point it to a new location. You can remap your Home Folder to a new drive, or use symlinks to redirect "C:\Users\<username>\My Documents\My Digital Editions" elsewhere, but you cannot tell ADE to look in "D:\my ebooks folder".

It's probably less effort to google "apprentice alf" and follow the directions to make calibre the true home of all your books.

Thx. I already use Calibre and I'm familiar with Apprentice Alf's valuable work

I suppose I can delete all the books from ADE because I don't read them from there anyway. There's just something about deleting books from my HDD that gives me hives...

I suppose I should just get over it.

Thx for your help. Good to know.

If you activate ADE, then copy the contents of your "My Digital Editions" folder, ADE sees all the books.

The trick is to activate it and copy the contents of your old ADE folder to the "new" auto-generated ADE folder before you add any additional/new books to ADE on the new hard drive.

At least that was my experience when I had to reformat my hard drive.

If you know Alf, then just import your books into Calibre. Then SAVE them to disk, before you do anything with them, and store these as un-DRM-ed originals. Now you just need to back up the originals, and the Calibre Library.

You can delete the books from ADE, and remove the files from the drive. After alfing the books, the DRM-ed versions are useless.

That's how I did it too. It's the fastest, easiest way and makes it possible to continue to buy new books in the future.

BTW, it's a good idea to make backup copies of all your ACSM files on a thumb drive or some other safe, off-line location. The files are tiny and they serve as "proof of purchase" for your books. You can always use the ACSM file you got when you bought the book to get another copy downloaded to ADE if you lose a book or the file gets corrupted. The ACSM files still work even when the bookstore you originally bought it from has gone out of business.

Moving "My Documents" off of the C: drive is a good thing to do anyway. This way, if your machine crashes or you need to replace the original HD, your DATA files are untouched. If you need to re-install Windows? No problem, just repoint your Documents, etc. to the folder on the second HDD. Recovery from a corrupted system drive is made far easier if you've moved the important stuff off to a second HD. Even if you only have a single physical drive, creating a second partition to hold your data makes recovery much easier. Oh, and of course, having all your books "Alf'd" means you don't really care what ADE does about them.
