How I'd like to see my Mini
I'd like it to have a good choice of fonts, with adjustable font weight and sharpness. and adjustable line spacing. In other words, a Kobo Aura HD screen, with all of its configurability, complete with Comfort Light.
I'd like it to have adjustable margins, right down to zero, on all 4 edges. Top and bottom margins to be configurable as to what (if anything) is displayed. Top and bottom margins to be tappable to make their content interchangeable with text from the book, so that the page can be totally filled with the book. I don't need to know things like progress information or the title of the book I am reading on a continuous basis. I am happy to tap to have it appear, and tap again to make it go away. Make tappability a configurable option, to satisfy those who do want to see the information continuously. That way, my Kobo Mini would spend most of its time displaying the book I am reading, and I would spend most of my time reading it. |

For the rest of your post, those are things people have asked for on all the Kobo devices and in the last few days, there has been a thread discussing what people want in a Mini with a light. |

The reference to the Aura HD screen. Have a look at Kobo's specs. You must be easily baffled. Quote:

With your new reference to the Aura HD specs, I assume what you want is a Mini sized device with the same DPI as the Aura HD and light. Or maybe a Mini sized device with the same resolution as the Aura HD. As to easily baffled, all you need to do is ask my wife ![]()
I don't think you really read the rest of my post at all, David. I have not seen anyone asking for what I proposed, but if they did, (link?) I can only say I agree with them.
Yes, I did read it, but, I answered badly. For that I apologise. I concentrated to much on the Mini with light and didn't explicitly respond to the other suggestions. When you made your post, about two thirds of the way down the first page of threads, is a thread titled is "Dreaming of a Kobo Aura Mini". That is a thread discussing a Mini sized device with light and is what I was referring to. It I there have been other threads discussing the same thing. But, the main reason I didn't comment on the rest of the suggestions is because I've read and responded to similar ones far to many times in the past. One of the most common questions here is how to get rid of the page numbers. Close behind that is how to get rid of the titles (for kepubs). When told they can't get rid of them, the are calls for Kobo to add options. So, I probably didn't read them properly and lumped them with the first paragraph in my reply. |

You are right, David, I'd like a Mini with the front light and the hi-res screen of an Aura HD. Why not?
![]() For the rest, I want to be able to fill the screen with the text of the book, and just be able to look up the other things when I need them, which isn't very often. There is an awful lot of wasted space on the screen of a Mini. I did read the thread entitled "Dreaming of a Kobo Aura Mini," and it waffled off-topic, and eventually lost me, but it did prompt me to post my own thread, which said what I wanted to see as succunctly as I was able. I acknowledge that my first sentence described features already in the Mini, but I would hope that with the light and hi-res screen of an Aura HD, the reading experience would be much enhanced. Now, that was two sentences of my post, only one of which referred to things already present. The whole of the rest of my post dealt with what I perceive as the wasted space in a Mini screen, as currently configured. It irritates me so much, that, every time I start to read it, I end up going back to my Kindle Paperwhite 2. This, notwithstanding that I find the size of the Mini to be ideal. Now, I acknowledge that this is a Kobo sub-forum, and I have just uttered a blasphemy, but the fact is that the Kindle software is much better than that of the Mini (value judgement, I know, but my opinion nonetheless). I keep trying with my Mini, but every time the bottom my page of text slides up a line for no good reason, I lose patience, and pick up my Kindle. And now there are rumours on this forum, that Kobo is preparing to abandon the Mini! Aarrgh!!! ![]() Last edited by BeeTee-Ess; 02-09-2014 at 03:58 AM. |

You are not alone! there are lots of posts around the forum on the wasted space due to the header / footer. Now, these are the keywords you've got to search for: header, footer
![]() At least, there is a way to decrease the footer height via kobopatcher. The header can only be circumvented by not using the kepub-viewer AFAIK (there are two different e-book viewers on the stock kobo: one of them only has a footer, no header and no reading stats per chapter). https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=220171 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=193294 |

KOreader and Coolreader allow complete margin configuration. Koreader's default for .epub (without selecting a style) only has a small line at the top with the file name on the far left and a "page#/total pages" and a battery meter on the far right. No footer.
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=226456 You can add them without effecting your Kobo software in any way. In fact the alternative readers launch in the same manner as selecting a book. Luck; Ken |

I know I'm in the minority, but I'm a long time Kindle user and one of the things I like most about Kobo is the extra header and footer space. For me it just makes reading a lot more pleasant. Every time I try to go back to my Kindle now I find that the screen just appears too "crowded" and I can't wait to get back to my Kobo.

In this case, the perfect ereader would be the one that gives the user a choice. Then everyone would be pleased (on this issue). Simple!

(Actually totally agree but...) Then the people who can't handle choice and want no configurability, just simplicity would complain ![]() |

That's what decent design is for. (yes I realise you agree!) It's why we have generic default settings and 'advanced' options sections. Don't want choice, don't click on the settings section. It doesn't intrude on everyday use of the reader.

Three Cheers for Meeera!
A truly configurable reader would come as close as possible to satisfying all tastes. However, being human beings, and cursed to pee in our own Corn flakes, some would complain there are just too many choices! For the record, I could live with the complaints of those overwhelmed with choices! |
