Calibre as marketing tool

Danish e-book site

This is from a Danish e-book site, like most everybody else outside the Amazon walled garden they provide e-books with watermark DRM. Then they give a step by step manual on how to convert it to MOBI using Calibra.

Me thinks Kovid should receive a percentage of this. But perhaps I'm alone in that concept?

I'm happy they are selling books that can be read on multiple devices without needing to jump through hoops. Encouraging that kind of business model is one of my motivations for developing calibre.

So selling DRM free books is payment enough for me

That is incredibly generous of you. The difference here is that when I use Calibre it is for my own personal benefit, when they recommend the way they do, it's for commercial purposes. Considering the time you put into developing and supporting the program, it is only fair that you receive some sort of remuneration for it. If selling DRM free (they do have watermarks) books is enough for you, then who am I to question this?

calibre has always been a labor of love for me. I love books and reading, that is what keeps me motivated. If all I was interested in was maximizing my income, I would have moved on to more lucrative projects years ago.

I am happy to see that some stores are encouraging people to own their books as opposed to owning a license to only read them only inside a walled garden. I am happy that calibre plays a part in encouraging that business model.

My response to this: I am going to donate some money to Calibre today. I also want to encourage reading, especially outside of walled gardens and without DRM, and donating is a really positive way to do this.

This book site may donate to Calibre and the individuals who start using it due to their recommendation may also donate. So, I don't believe that Kovid does not benefit in some way. Thanks for a GREAT program Kovid.
