Have Ereaders Affected Your Book Collection?
Based on another thread, I was wondering what affect, if any, ereaders have had on your book collection. Do not include craft, cookbooks or 'art' books in this estimate since lots of people prefer actual books to work from. If 'other', comment please. This is my first poll!
edited to add: Art books - I just couldn't think of how to describe these. Includes atlases, pictorial books of ww2 ships/battles, coffee table books, reference books. Basically, books that are not primarily text and don't really lend themselves to ereaders or tablets. Last edited by Tarana; 01-14-2014 at 10:38 AM. |

I've replaced nearly all my paper books with their ebook equivalents and donated the paper versions to the library. I'm down from about 500 paper books to 20.

I intended to sell all my paper fiction books once I can buy an ebook version, but so far I haven't sold many, mainly because the few I have sold fetched such a pitiful price that it doesn't really seem worth the effort.

My book collection has grown (in that I have more ebooks) though I do buy far fewer paper books now days. I did buy a bunch the other week from my public library. They had them 3-4 books to a bag for 25¢ a bag. Which isn't a bad deal. They get a bit of $ towards new materials and clear the shelf of old books so new ones can be bought and I get a book for 6¢-8¢ depending on if there are 3 or 4 books in the bag.

My pbook accumulation remains but my new pbook purchases have declined to near zero.

Almost all gone now. The only books I kept were those large coffee table books.

The number of pbooks *will* be going down shortly. It stopped growing the minute I was gifted my first Kindle, but health issues have kept me from doing anything about getting rid of the now useless paper copies. Health or not though, those books are going away this year. Life circumstances are changing quite a bit & I expect to be moving in the next 12-24 months...and I refuse to move those books again!

Due to my recent change of status back to being single, I have converted the back bedroom into a library. The lounge on the left is a fold out bed type.
All my remaining book cases and smaller books are in this room now, with only my reference books and coffee table books remaining in other locations. I only purchased two paperback books last year. I enjoy taking a cup of tea and my ereader into my "library" to have a half hour or so of relaxing reading. |

The biggest difference is that the paper book collection isn't growing.
I suppose it's decreasing slightly, but I have to think before I get rid of a book. |

Just donated another batch today, freeing up half a bookcase. Hard to part with some (The Harry Potter books I read along together with my niece as they came out, good times there) but I've got ebook copies of the ones I want to re-read. I love the idea that my books will find their way into somebody else's hands to enjoy as I did.
Suckers were *heavy* too. Some of the ones I let go I must have moved at least a dozen times. And my back is not getting any younger. I have 816 books on the reader I just put down. They weigh 8 1/2 ounces. :] |

I specifically bought an ereader because we moved to a much smaller place and I realized how much space my books really took up (and how heavy they were!).
I have made a point to keep the younger-reader ones around so my kids can experience those ones at some point. Also any sort of coffee table book with pictures (like my Marilyn Monroe Encyclopedia) are staying because some books are just better in physical form. My husband still has his books - though he doesn't read any of them. I do usually get him a book or two for xmas each year, but only because he's difficult to shop for. (This year it was Chuck Norris Facts $0.50 at the library and Ron Burgandy's autobiography.) My daughter (age 7) has an increasingly growing pbook collection. |

My paper collection basically stopped growing about 5 years ago, and one of my New Years resolutions for this year is to cull my paper collection of everything that's been duplicated by ebooks I've purchased. I'm still debating how much of the collection that have ebooks available will also go.

It must have been at least a year and a half ago, if not longer, since I bought a pbook. I have been selling some of my books and I've got another stack waiting until I have time for another trip to the bookstore. I won't be selling all my pbooks. I'll keep some because I either want to reread it and there isn't an ebook edition of (yet) or because of sentimental reasons.

I have a huge book collection now, thanks to Kobo coupons and Kindle daily deals. My paperbook collection also slowly increases as I occasionally stop by the used book store and pick up some books. Although I really ought to stop that as usually the books cost about 350 to 600 yen and with Kobo coupons I could get the ebook versions for about the same price.
