MYK - Cannot delete Dictionaries
Why is it Amazon has set it up so that you can no longer delete dictionaries? Now we have to have our MYK filled with dictionaries in languages that we do not read or speak?? WTH??

It has been that way for quite a while. Long before the new MYK page was introduced, deleted dictionaries would reappear. Amazon really doesn't understand reading and libraries, IMHO. I'm tired of all the foreign language dictionaries and User Guides, which I will never use, cluttering up an already cluttered MYK page.

It's the multiple Asian dictionaries that annoy me the most. Why they think I need 4 Chinese and one Japanese dictionary is beyond me.

Seven Chinese dialects

Mandarin is the Government Official language. Cantonese is the most widely used. They really needed 7 dictionaries. |

Luckily I can't see your post Sirmaru, but I can categorically say that I don't want ANY Chinese dictionaries regardless of his many dialects there are! I am not Chinese and don't plan to read it.

Most folks can't read that post.

By the way, I am NOT Chinese but do read books written in those languages at times: i.e., Sun Tzu's Art of War (1930 Edition). I notice my MYK page has SIXTEEN User Guides. That is really far too many. By the way, they cannot be seen if one just taps "books." Users should have the right to permanently delete user guides. However, those deletions can never be recovered. Today you may only need an English dictionary but tomorrow you may need dictionaries for other languages. That is why they should not be deleted unless Amazon figures out a way to recover them if necessary. It appears we are a multinational forum and have users of many, many languages. Most non-American serious readers tend to read books in many languages. Outside of America most literate folks can understand at least 2 or 3 languages and in many parts of the world understanding 5 to 8 languages is almost compulsory. In Europe understanding English, German and French in addition to one's home language is really necessary. In Asia understanding Japanese, ALL 7 Chinese languages (dialects) PLUS English is really required. In South America understanding Spanish, Portuguese, English and German is really required. In Canada understanding English and French is REQUIRED by law. Even in America understanding BOTH English and Spanish is a good idea. In the Mideast understanding Arabic, Pashtoon, English and French is really required. Last edited by sirmaru; 01-23-2014 at 03:19 PM. |

"Needed" by WHOM?

As I said, once permanently deleted from the MYK page, they can never be recovered. If you are unilingual, you are a very small MINORITY on planet Earth. Last edited by sirmaru; 01-23-2014 at 03:31 PM. |

I am not saying Amazon shouldn't offer them, I am merely saying they should not stop you from getting rid of a feature you don't want. This is a matter completely independent of how many languages I know, so why are you once again trying to confuse issues by accusing people of being "minorities". IIRC I am also a stupid minority because I am not a sirmarustomer but instead use calibre. Last edited by eschwartz; 01-23-2014 at 04:05 PM. Reason: added link |

After the fiasco of Cloud Collections I currently have no plans to buy another Kindle but I sincerely hope that if I ever do these irrelevant dictionaries do not get duplicated. I set of everything is bad enough.

I am pretty sure the reason is because you don't have ANY dictionaries until you register your first device. Amazon just double-checks to make sure you have all their dictionaries, every time you register a device. |

What if you suddenly decided to study Spanish or some other language? Then, you'd be glad that the dictionary was there.
I don't get why people get so put out by having a few extra free books on their account. |

For the record, I stopped caring a long time ago, and remain content that they all appear way WAY behind the first 500 or so books to load, but some people do care. We are allowed to delete a book that we paid for, thus requiring us to pay more money to regain the right to read it, but we cannot delete a useless dictionary that we never asked for? |
