Okay, who is guilty?
Okay, who is guilty?
Guilty of keeping a copy of all their ebooks on every device they own, if more than one? ![]() I used to be, and sort of still are to a degree, though since signing up to BookBub and getting heaps of freebies from Amazon via them, I now only automatically place ebooks on my devices, that I paid something for ... or if I collect that author. Even then, while most of the freebies remain on the cloud awaiting selection, I do keep a copy of everything in Kindle For PC. In fact, K4PC is my default for every purchase ... so they download to that automatically, and I have full control over what ends up on my devices. I also only keep copies of those ebooks with graphical elements on my 10" Samsung tablet (and maybe some on my Paperwhite). However, I am now at that point, where both my Kindles are close to full, and I have started removing less important ebooks from them, to accommodate more preferred new ones. Supplementary question for some - When you get a new device, what do you do in regard to previous purchases, now that you have a quite large library of them? Of course, many ebooks have a limit, so you aren't allowed to have them on too many devices ... that limit usually being around 6 copies, if I recall rightly ... and that includes on the Kindle Apps (PC etc). I intend to seriously limit what goes on my next device purchase, especially at the thought of the time needed to download all I have. Of course, it can be a tough choice sometimes. Even though I love my Kindle Keyboard, generally I prefer to read on the Paperwhite, because of the better lighting. So I guess another question for some owners, is - Do you prefer to read on your newest device, and does that mean your older devices barely get a look in, if ever? Me, I am quite happy to read all text only ebooks on the Paperwhite, and can't imagine that would change with a new device purchase, as the Paperwhite works so well. That would mean of course, that unless a new device has some amazing new feature, I would probably only read recent ebook acquisitions on it ... or perhaps if a different format (i.e. I got a Kobo etc instead of Kindle). Nope:
Different devices have different books. No need to worry about syncing ![]() For most cases, I remove books from the DEVICE ( ![]() ![]() Backups (full Libraries) are done in multiple places. One is a clone of the Main (desktop) onto my Laptop (grab and go in case of a California disaster). Then there is the NAS And a USB hard drive |

Some of this is copy-pasted from my post in the Kobo forum in the "how many readers" thread.
My list includes all the devices I own. They are all still operable. I just recently acquired the Tolino and use it if I am going to be away from my home PC and want to be able to obtain new library books. I bought the Kobo Clara when the Sony T3 could no longer obtain library books directly due to Overdrive system changes/upgrades. Since obtaining the Tolino, I use the Kobo mostly at home, especially if I am going to read in bed at night, because it has the nice adjustable light. I occasionally use the Sony T3 if I am reading a book that has a fair number of unfamiliar words, especially British words, since the Sony has both American and English versions of the Oxford Dictionary which I like better than the dictionaries on the other devices. I haven't used the Sony T1 in a long time. It had developed the dictionary lockup problem and also has a divot in the screen where something fell on it from above while I was reading. When I started using the T3 I kept the T1 as a better-than-nothing backup. I don't really need the T1 any more but haven't done anything about getting rid of it. Of course I tend to be a pack rat in general.... I bought my first ereader (the T1) in early 2012. Since then I've acquired approximately 200 books that were purchased or free. I do have copies of these books on all my readers (there may be a few that aren't on the T1 since I hardly ever even turn that one on). The majority of my reading is library books. I just put my current library books on whichever reader I actually want to read them on. Last edited by 4691mls; 10-25-2019 at 10:39 AM. |

I read one book at a time. For me it is purchase (or borrow), download, read, delete from device.
Edit: I use calibre to track my previous reads and plan my next one. |

I guess a good portion of mistrust also features, especially if no DRM removal were available. And then there is accidents or issues, so comfort in knowing other copies exist on some device. That said, I do go to some great lengths to ensure I cannot be impacted. And like in another topic/thread there is a visual element for me, even if it cannot compare to your physical bookcase, virtual is better than nothing. I like to almost drool over my collection. ![]() |

I figure as long as there's room on the device, no need to delete.

I can't.
Too many PD collections for the ereader. (Just the commercial ebooks.) But the tablet, PC, and desktop have full copies of everything. Also two external harddrives. If it fits it gets a copy. Backup. Backup. Backup. |

I'm not interested in backing up books anymore. I don't buy them until I'm ready to read them. And once I've read them, I'm usually done with them. I wrung the value out of them by reading them. The rare ones that I may want to re-read will probably still be for sale years from now (which is how long it would be before I'd probably be ready to re-read it). I don't mind rebuying good books. Did it all the time with physical ones.

I read one book at a time. I read on one device. It is always with me. All of my books are on that device. But, they are also backed up on multiple hard drives and the cloud.

I don't keep all my books on all my kindles. I have had my first in 2008 with the K1 and have had many kindles since. It would take too much time and too much bother to load them all on there. But I do usually have probably 200 or so on it. Not always the same books on all kindles. But they are all synced, which I love, so if I pick a kindle up and it doesn't have that book, all I have to do is click on it and it loads right were I left off on another kindle.
All new purchased and borrowed books go to the newest and most used kindle, which is my Oasis3 now. So that is where they collect, until I get the next device and start doing that on that one. I never go back and sort them out later on older devices, unless I read them. I do delete "read" books from my kindles. But with the new sorting and the READ tag and collections on my kindles, its been much easier to keep up with my books. Compared to how it was way back before there were collections. I don't worry how many books are on my kindles, there is plenty of space now. I wouldn't mind having all on there, but I am just too lazy to go through that one by one, or 10 by 10 as I can do from the account. It would take too long. My books are in the 1000's. |

I have all my ebooks on both my iPad and iPad mini, but then again, while I have 3700+ ebooks, very few of them were freebies. I have all the ebooks that I purchased from Amazon on my kindle paperwhite. I only have a limited number of ebooks (around 1000) on my Kobo.

I can't keep my whole library on my ereaders, it wouldn't fit. So I keep only the ones I'm likely to want to read in the next ten years or so. That's still about three thousand books. The list changes all the time, as I finish books and buy new ones.
All my books have the DRM removed the instant I purchase them and are sideloaded to my devices from Calibre, not directly from a store. So I don't need to worry about any restrictions. I read on all the devices listed in my profile. Generally I read a book from beginning to end on one device and start a new book on another. So syncing isn't important for me.
