Can't open large book on Glo HD
I purchased a DRM-free epub about my new camera that won't open on the Glo HD with 3.16.0. It brings up the message "Oops! This document couldn't be opened" (and goes on and on about Adobe DRM being expired).
The book is definitely DRM free, I can open it in Calibre, and I've tried epub-to-epub conversion with Calibre and it still won't open. It is a large book, 85MB, but it opens perfectly on my regular Glo with 3.12.1, and also opens perfectly on my over-4-year-old Sony PRS-350. I was going to try and split it up into several books, but that would ruin using the TOC and knowing which book had the info I needed. I purchased it directly from the author's site (at http://www.friedmanarchives.com/RX-100MK3/index.htm ) but I'm certain there's nothing wrong with the formatting since it does open in my older other readers without any problems, so I really have no cause to complain to the author at all. Any suggestions or ideas why this book won't open on the Glo HD? Is there a chance it'll be fixed in future firmware upgrades? I'm pretty disappointed in not being able to use this book on the reader I take with me. |

No ideas on why it won't open.
Maybe try converting to kePub to see if the Access reader has better luck with it? I see he gives you three formats. Maybe as a last ditch see how the Mobi file looks. I know Kobo's mobi support isn't great, but maybe it'll be okay in this particular case? Last edited by AnemicOak; 06-23-2015 at 11:59 PM. |

I did more experimenting as suggested. The reader chokes on the .mobi after opening it, and then restarts the reader. The .kepub surprisingly worked and worked well though on the Glo HD, so at least I can use it while out without having to go back to the Glo.
I tried 2 other very large books, the Douay-Rheims Bible (only 2.1mb but 10k pages), and a Betty Crocker Cookbook (170mb with a lot of photos like the camera book). Both loaded in .epub and .kepub formats on the reader. However the cookbook was pretty garbled in .epub format, even though it did open (it's an older book, no idea where I purchased it from so there could be something wrong with the conversion). The Bible links didn't work in the .kepub format, but was readable in both .kepub and .epub. Maybe there's something about a lot of images within a book that the Glo HD can't handle (or maybe it's the firmware)? If it can open just fine on 2-4 year old readers, it should also open just fine on Kobo's newest reader. Edit: Actually, the images in the camera book are mostly .png. Did I read some posts about issues with that format on some firmwares? Last edited by Ripplinger; 06-24-2015 at 02:49 AM. |

Firstly, as I would expect this to have a lot of pictures in it, loading it as a kepub is probably a good idea. I think the zoom for pictures in it should help.
The working on the Glo and not the Glo HD is strange. The only thing I can think of is that I think the RMSDK has been updated between between firmware 3.12.1 and 3.16.0. But, when I have seen the error you saw, it was a processing problem. The last time was with a book I created with 4503 ToC entries. These were not added to the database properly and the book couldn't be opened. The PNG bug only affects kepubs so that isn't it. And it shows a black rectange where the PNG is. And then it is only for PNGs with a limited pallete. Have you opened the book in the calibre editor and checked for errors? It might shows something that could be handled differently in the firmware versions. That's about all I can think of without actually seeing the book. |

While I can zoom in on the pictures in the .kepub, they usually appear with incorrect aspect ratio (height is never correct, they're too scrunched down). Even zooming in doesn't correct that. But I really don't need the image views when I'm out if I need to check on a setting, the text is more important, so that's livable. I haven't noticed any black boxes though instead of the png files, but haven't looked at them all in the .kepub.
I checked with Calibre's editor and it found errors for "Named entities present", I let it correct those and reloaded the book, but now the reader doesn't even see the .epub version of the book. At one point the reader database was hosed, said I had no books, no collections, but I did get it back without having to wipe the reader. So not sure how much more I can try with adding this book. Sigil shows different errors, value 'black' does not match regular expression facet. It seems to apply only to the black borders around the tables within the book, and they display fine in the .kepub so I left those errors alone. I did notice though that the tables do not appear correctly in any of the .epub versions on the Glo or PRS-350. The text within the tables is always cut off at the right side, but that's always been a problem with tables in the past for me. There are something like 400 entries in the TOC, but they all seem to be correct and links all working in the .epubs on the Glo and 350, and neither Calibre nor Sigil show any errors there at all. I wouldn't mind giving you a link to the book, but not sure that's allowed here since it's not a public domain book, even to troubleshoot something such as this. |

You *could* PM the book. That is what is usually done for troubleshooting issues, or in the case of calibre, uploading to a status:Private bug report.
