Reader software for Mac: Which folder does it keep books?
Hi all, I've been looking for where the Sony Reader software stores e-books and annotations, but I can't find it.
I'm running OSX Mavericks with the most recent Sony Reader software. Thank you! |

Also, does anyone know where annotations are stored?
I'm still confused on how annotations work: where are they stored? How does the Sony Reader store them? Thank you! |

Could anyone explain how annotations work when you have multiple copies of a book on the Reader?
I can see some files with the extension '.note' and I assume these are what annotations are stored, but I don't know how annotations work exactly: does the PRS-T2 upload the annotations to the Reader software? At the moment, I have multiple copies of a few ebooks on my PRS-T2 and I want to delete them, but I don't want to accidentally delete my annotations. How do annotations work when there are multiple copies of the same book? Does each book have its own annotations file? Thanks for any help! |

Aside: what I used to do was actually use Calibre to store the books. So I added every book to Calibre (which copied it to a Calibre Library folder), then deleted the original file, and then in Sony Reader I added a reference to the file in the Calibre Library. This saved having multiple copies of books and not being sure which one was "correct" or not. (I also tweak books using Sigil to correct metadata and typos..) If you're curious, run the Reader software and then the Activity Monitor application. Select the Reader app in the Activity Monitor display and then the (i) icon in the toolbar. Go to the "Open Files and Ports" tab and you will see what files the app actually has open. A lot of the files will be things like GUI libraries and stuff which isn't very interesting, but you will also see any plists or databases the program has open. I've deleted my Sony Reader software now that I no longer (can) use the reader hardware. Kobo doesn't need a kernel extension or browser plugin, unlike Sony. |

Books are stored in the folder /User/<Username>/Documents/My Books/Reader. You could do a search for EPUB files to double-check you don't have them anywhere else on your hard-drive.
I don't know where annotations are stored since I stopped using the Sony Reader software for this purpose. I use the Evernote feature now on the reader. Annotations are stored in an SQLite database, books.db, on your Reader. I hypothesize that they might be stored similarly for the desktop software in the db file in your Mac Library folder. However, I wouldn't mess around with it without having experience or help in this area. |

For annotations, you can try looking in:
/User/<username>/Library/Application Support/Sony Corporation/ReaderDesktop /User/<username>/Library/Preferences/Sony Corporation/ReaderDesktop If you don't like using the terminal, go to the Finder and hold down the option key while clicking on the "Go" menu. This will reveal the hidden "Library" menu option. Sorry about not giving a definitive answer, but I don't use the annotations feature. |

It only contains one book on my system, whereas my Reader contained 90 or so books, so perhaps it only gets used for storing some books? The only book it had on my box had Adobe DRM, obviously one I'd forgotten about before using Apprentice Alf and Calibre. That directory also had some *.notes files, which look like SVG versions of the drawn annotations. |

Sony purchases that are downloaded should show in this folder by default. Also any ACSM file that is opened with the Sony Reader desktop software will result in the EPUB to be downloaded to this folder whether it is from your local library or another bookstore such as Kobo.
Your posts says that you deleted original files after loading them into calibre & its storage folders so perhaps that is why you no longer see books in the Sony folder. Maybe you deleted them awhile ago and forgot? |

Alright, thanks a lot for your replies. I'm going through them now.
I have multiple copies of some ebooks on my PRS-T2 so I deleted one, but all of the copies were deleted on my PRS-T2. Why is this? |

I don't understand how ebooks are kept in Sony Reader software on my Mac. I see four tabs at the top of my screen in the Sony Reader software: 'My Library', 'Reader Store', 'More Content' and 'Reader'.
How do I delete ebooks I want to get rid of so that I don't have multiple copies on my PRS-T2? Which 'tab' do I click on so that I can add or remove ebooks to the PRS-T2? Thanks for any help! Last edited by EbookNovice; 01-09-2014 at 03:18 AM. |

Man, this is frustrating!
I just changed the filename of two ebooks so I could check how they're stored on the PRS-T2, but the filenames weren't changed. Why is this? |

I suggest using Calibre.
If I was put in charge of Sony eReader division I'd license Calibre and save the money they're wasting on inept developers in house. |
