Meet the antagonist:

Leo inhaled the vapors, slumped back on the truck’s seat and let his skull roll on the headrest, feeling his blood slosh around like motor oil in a milk jug. Exhaling, he widened his eyes and looked out the open window. He felt the cold air bite into his flesh, his senses magnifying a hundred times over. The white hillside and dark cliffs jumped out as if they were lit by two full moons. It’d been dead quiet, but now he could hear the slush chewing in the river’s current, sloshing like the liquid garbage in his brain. Inhaling the raw air brought the taste of his neighbor’s horses to his tongue, and they were a half-mile away. Goddamn! The shit had really brought him back to life.

He fired up the Dodge, put his meth kit away, and pulled out onto the road, heading for town–his fingers tapping the piano keys on the steering wheel.
