Adobe Digital Editions freezes

This may not be the right forum, but I couldn't work out where else to ask for help.

For the past couple of weeks, whenever I try to open an ADE protected book in Adobe Digital Editions, the splash window appears, then it freezes. When I open "Task Manager", only the splash window is listed, but after I have removed the window apparently ADE is still open in the background, although it does not show up in Task Manager, and I am unable to uninstall it.

Twice now I have restarted the computer, and uninstalled and reinstalled ADE. In each case I have successfully opened one book with it, then it has frozen again.

Can anyone please help me?! I am using a Laser ereader, and I had been using Adobe Digital Editions for about two years without any problems.

Is it the same book that you have opened each time? If it is maybe the book file itself is corrupted somehow. Or is it a file of significant size compared to what you usually open in the reader? How much space is open on the reader? It could be that either the book file is corrupted or that you have your reader too full.

Thank you for your reply, crich70. No, it's been different books - to open more than one book in ADE I had to restart the computer each time.

However, since I wrote asking for help I've emptied my ADE library (there were 187 books in it), and this may have solved the problem. I have just opened two more books without it freezing, but I'm not ready to trust it yet!

Is this the ereader you use ClareK?

From the review it sounds like it has a lot of problems. It wouldn't surprise me if it did have a fairly small space for storing books and found 187 to be too many at one time.

Also, make sure that you have removed any USB storage devices (memory sticks, external hard drives) before running ADE. ADE has an irritating habit of checking external storage devices to see if they're activated ereaders. As far as I can tell, it doesn't actually make any changes to data on the device, but it takes a long time for it to decide that it isn't an ereader and it acts "frozen" in the meantime.

Thank you, Difflugia - perhaps I was a bit too impatient, and I needed to wait longer. Crick70, my ereader is a Laser EB850. I'll see what happens when I try to use ADE today - I don't think I can cope with a misbehaving computer until I've had my second cup of coffee!

Clare do you use Calibre? Have you got those same books in Calibre?

Also, instead of using ADE I use Sony Reader for PC to download all epubs DRM and DRM free an library ebooks.

You don't need to have a Sony ereader to use Reader for PC. I've never had a problem with the software and I've downloaded over 500 books.

Lynx-Lynx, I started using Calibre a while ago, so a lot of the books are there as well - I think perhaps it's time I put the rest of the books on.

I'll have a look at Sony Reader for PC - thanks for the suggestion!
