Kindle in Black?
I absolutely love my new Kindle, but I want it in Black. Or at-least a darker gray.
Has anyone attempted to paint theirs? Will Amazon sell me just the plastic shell so I can practice?

Krylon makes a spray paint just for plastic, get it at Wal Mart. Not painted a Kindle yet but I did a custom paint job on the better half's laptop computer. Pink of course

Make sure you cover the screen very carefully!
By the way, that Glad Press-N-Seal stuff is not a good choice for covering the screen. It works just fine, but it can strip the topmost layer off the display. That hasn't really caused me actual problems on my PRS500, but it's probably not a bad idea to avoid doing anyway.

I'm wondering how hard it would be to remove all the guts and Screen from the white housing. that way I could get a solid application of paint, and not worry about masking the screen...
Maybe I'll wait for a few weeks, just to make sure I do not have any warranty issues...

I dunno, that's a good idea, though. It'd be relatively easy with a PRS500, and I think the 505 isn't really more difficult, but I've never held a Kindle, so I couldn't offer a comment that would be worth anything.

I might risk spray painting it just taping off the screen if it weren't for the keyboard. I wouldn't want to spray the keys and make them unreadable and I'd worry that the paint would get in through there and mess stuff up. I think I would feel more comfortable removing the housing to paint, but then I'd end up with a dark Kindle with white keys which might be functionally better (the white case wouldn't bounce so much light back reducing the contrast) but might be rather funny-looking. Of course, I'm a Kindle owner. So that already says I prefer function over form, I suppose.

Maybe someone with a broken Kindle would be willing to experiment. Somewhere around here I saw a link to a page with pictures of a Kindle completely taken apart, so it would be easier to paint.

Igor's place has the photo...
Igor's step by step
http://www.flickr.com/photos/2172951...7603433447881/ Even though he did not remove the LCD, it still looks do-oable.... But I'd feel better if I had a spare shell 'just i case' Maybe I'll contact support and see if I can buy one. (I doubt it though) |
