As far as I know it has always been possible to do this! I think that you might have to install a frame buffer handler but that should be the limit.

Yep, the "frame buffer" part is causing me problems. Basically, I could not view the GUI to click on the "Content Server" menu entry. Maybe I'll try later with Xvnc and a local X server on my laptop...

Sorry, wrong question on my part... I meant the "Start wireless device connection", which seems to be needed for the Android Calibre Companion application. Is there a command line option for that? I don't have access to my calibre server at the moment, so I can't easily check myself

The wireless device driver is just that a device driver that allows you to use a wireless device from th GUI as though it were connected physically, as such it depends on the GUI. But, CC is able to connect to the content server separately as well.

@hakan42 Even without the GUI, Calibre Companion does allow you to queue multiple books for download via the content server. A nice feature I haven't seen in a mobile app before.

I think the issue is more HOW to start the driver without the calibre GUI to effect the required changes.

I thought Kovid answered that question, you can't. Unless I'm missing something It wouldn't make sense, why enable a device if you still need the GUI to select the books and Send to device.

I think of 'Wireless Connection' as just another Device, as in Send To because the 'On Device' appears and you PUSH books to the device. OTOH The content server is completly device unaware. You must PULL books, make format choices... |

Yes but before you can use the device you have to have configured the driver and told it to start.

With a headless server your only option is the Content Server and you don't need the wireless device connection to be started to use the Content Server. |

You don't need the GUI to send books with the wireless connection - if you have any news feeds set to automatically download, they will be sent to the device as soon as you connect. I use that everyday with CC. |

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but Purple Lady has raised a very similar question and use case to mine. I too would like to run Calibre as a daemonized instance and still have the ability to run the wireless device connection element.
I'm not interested in using the GUI to interact with my device - I just want to use an android app (Calibre Sync in my case) to discover the server, navigate and download books. I can do this when firing the server up as a GUI instance, after enabling with wireless device connection element (again noting that I don't need to use ANY element of the GUI. No need to push to the device, etc.) I know that this question has come up multiple times in the past few years, but is this something that can now be considered, please? |
