need help: upgrade's frozen my ereader
I'm wondering if anyone can help. This morning, my ereader got stuck, wouldn't respond to my touch, so i tried to turn it off. no luck. tried to do a soft reset, no luck. tried to connect and disconnect to pc, no luck. finally did a hard reset.
it was running software that was about a year old. so i knew it would update to current version. problem is, the new version of software (3.0.1) keeps causing all sorts of problems. every five pages, the ereader stops responding. makes me do a soft reset. even if i exit a book after only a few pages, it doesn't keep my place, either. in the last 15 minutes, it's stopped responding three times. did a soft reset each time, and each time it comes back on, works for a few minutes, then stops responding. help? any thoughts on: a) is there an easy way to go back a version of the kobo software that would be more stable? b) any way to prevent 3.0.1 from having all these freezes? all i really want at this point is a usable ereader again. ![]() |

To me, it sounds as if you have some database corruption issues so I'd suggest doing a factory reset, either from the settings menu if your ereader runs long enough for you to get there or by holding down the home button while you power on or reset it. Hold the home button until the LED starts rapidly flashing and then release it and be patient. After the factory reset, connect the ereader to your computer and go through the setup. The first time out, I'd suggest ejecting your ereader and letting the upgrade install and test it's behaviour for a while. If your ereader still misbehaves, go through the factory reset and setup but this time before ejecting your ereader, you'll need to clean up some files/folders in the .kobo directory. You should see KoboRoot.tgz and manifest.md5dsum and possibly, an upgrade directory. Delete the files and directory if they exist. At this point, safely remove your ereader and let it process content. This will leave you on the original factory firmware. You can take a look in the Direct Links to Kobo Firmware thread in the Kobo Developer's Corner ( https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=185660 to find the download link for a newer firmware than the factory but not the newest and instructions on installing the firmware. One issue is that you will need to avoid syncing your ereader unless you are prepared to delete the update files each time which gets to be a bit of a PITA. Regards, David |

I've found that in earlier versions of the firmware since it did not yet have the feature to download synced kepubs to an SDcard when onboard memory is full, you could first install the downgraded FW then fill up the onboard memory with sideloaded epub files till you have less than 80MB free. This will allow syncing with Kobo of any new kepubs you purchase that will fit as well as sync your awards and reading life. This works because the sync process will not be able to completely download the 'new' firmware which occurs at the end of the sync.

thanks everyone. i've been playing around with it some more. it seems to be a problem with the touch screen taking a while to be responsive.
when it "freezes" if i leave it on, it will eventually advance the page ... but it might take up to half an hour to do so. have contacted Kobo support. I'd bought a store replacement/warranty, but the store I bought it from no longer sells Kobos, they sell Nooks. So they want to replace it with a Nook Simple Touch with Glow Light. not sure what I think about that. I know they have fragile screens. And a bit worried about getting a US-only product like a nook, seeing as I'm in the US only half the year. thoughts? |
