Edit book - confused about saving
After making small changes in my epub file using Calibre's Book Editor and then saving the file I find that my book is exactly the same as it was before the editing i.e. the changes have not taken place.
But if I immediately convert the file (epub to epub) the changes are there. Why should conversion be necessary if I have saved the file after making the changes. Is it me? Am I missing something? |

Conversion shouldn't be necessary. Simply saving from the editor works fine for me.

Well, I don't know where Calibre is saving the file. It's not saving to the same folder that the original was in. i.e. it don't overwrite the original.
It will save a new file if I select "Save a copy" and give it a different name and place in another folder. Still confused! |

Are you editing one of the books in your Calibre library, or running the editor externally? If I right click on a book in my Calibre library, select "Edit Book" from the pop-up menu, edit the book, then save it, the changes are certainly showing up for me.

I don't use a Calibre Library. I keep all my books in other folders in Windows.
I drag and drop a book onto the Calibre screen from one of these Windows folders. After making changes I press "save" and then cannot find the file. I have looked into Calibre's Own Library folder which is where books go after conversion but it is not there. So I still don't know where Calibre puts the file? |

Ah, OK. Sorry, I'm unfamiliar with that workflow and can't assist.
Does it work if you run the editor, open the book from within the editor, then save it? |

Edit expects to put the book back where it came from. Drop is thin air (no return path) you can use the CLI I made a BAT file that contains: Code:
calibre-debug -t %1.epub |

Or just put a shortcut to the editor on your desktop, run it, and use the editor's "File/Open" command.

I have been experimenting.
There is no way to start Calibre and select File Open. I do not get that option. I can select File Add but then the book does not save when using the editor. This is what is confusing to me. I get the option to save the file from within Editor but it does not save. The best way, so far, is to do what Harry suggested and have a shortcut to the Editor on my desktop. I get the option to Open Book and I get the option to Save or Save a Copy. I don't get the option to Save File As but I suppose Save a Copy is nearly the same thing. At least, doing it this way my editing is saved. Thank you all for your help. |

@Moonraker - I prefer to do any 'serious' editing away from the calibre library folders - by serious I mean anything that's more than a few minutes effort. So I copy the epub from its library folder to a work in progress (wip) folder.
In the wip folder I select Edit from the Windows shell context menu, for epubs Edit is associated with ebook-edit.exe. At the start of an editing session I do a Save a Copy with "<whatever>.nnn.epub" - where nnn is a counter. When I finally finish editing a book I do a regular Save. So in my wip folder I end up with title - author.000.epub title - author.001.epub title - author.002.epub ... title - author.nnn.epub title - author.epub The last one is what I will eventually put back into the library when editing is complete. This one time I had a very small correction to be made so decided to try out Calibre's Edit Book. It ended up taking me much longer but at least I got an idea of how the Edit programme works. I do now have Edit e-books in Windows shell but I shall continue to use Sigil for the majority of my editing, at least for the time being. I find it very comforting to have two applications that can edit e-pubs. |

Save Location
I have brought this up before.
Calibre always opens the SAVE at the last place you saved a file rather than the location of the file you have just loaded. I do not use the editor but the same condition may happen. No choice location of save location is presented when saving in the editor. |

A choice is presented if you save a copy. But you get a dialog box asking if you want to replace the existing one, if it will overwrite a file with the same name.
