Epubs with oversize html files
When I started with epub files on a sony 505 there was a frequent problem with files over (i believe) 260k inside the epub and i got used to doing an epub to epub convert in calibre
I still tend to do this with all new pubs on entry to calibre, but in a post Sony world with the files usually destined for an iPad, am i wasting my time with this conversion or does the problem still exist? adrian |

Modern ebook reading devices do not have a hard limit, unlike the sony readers.
However, it is never a good idea to have very large html files, as devices will still choke on them. There is no longer a hard limit, but as a rule of thumb, the old limit of 260K works well. Most ebook files do not have large enough html files inside to cause an iPad problems, so you could probably get away with not doing the conversions. However, every once in a while you may come across a pathological epub. |

Right, but it's still better not to forget the old limits. There are still enough of the old readers in use. And not everybody of the users is able to help himself.

Your point is lost on me. The OP wasn't asking a hypothetical question about what might or might not work for everyone else he was asking for himself.

I still think there will be performance gains (by avoiding performance losses) using the old size.

Thank you all
I think the answer for me is not to do an automatic conversion with each epub but from time to time run the quality check plug in on all recent books for the oversize html file check and convert epub to epub for any that fail the check. |
