OS Rot?

When my HD last updated to the most recent f/w, it seemed to work great guns at first — everything clean and pretty functional. But as the weeks have gone by since then, phantom backwards page turns on right-side taps (or even slides of the finger!) and the unexpected summoning of the dictionary when tapping to turn the page (sometimes resulting in a frozen screen and requiring a reboot, usually achievable via the slider and not needing a pinhole reset) are becoming more common.

Is this something others experience? The books in use at the time are fairly standard ePubs, nothing tricksy in their formatting, usually sub-400K in size, and sideloaded via Windows Explorer through a USB connection. (I've never enabled the wireless.) I wondered if they were damaged books, somehow, so I ran the ones I'd noticed this happening in most recently through ePubCheck, but there were no errors generated at all — nor in Sigil. And I keep the screen and IR ports inside the bezel clean and free of dust, hairs, crumbs, or whatnot.

It seems to be accelerating in frequency. I don't do anything with my HD but read books and delete them from the device when I'm done — how does the software manage to dirty its own nest?

The only thing I've noticed is a double-page turn every once in a while. It happens rarely enough so that I usually attribute it to a clumsy page-turn gesture on my part. And it is usually only one extra page forward, not the multiple page-forward bug I used to experience with older firmware. I'm on 3.1.1.

Thanks for the reply, icallaci.

But I wonder is it something about the way I write posts? It's a bit demoralising to see that so many people have read the thread, but nobody of the many people who seem to have said previously they were experiencing anomalous backward page turns has felt interested in replying. I'm just trying to work out what's happening, and perhaps how to address it.

If icallaci hadn't replied, I'd be wondering if I was typing in invisible ink again.

My experience is that double page turns / freezes are purely random and can happen almost any time.

Since switching from a tap to a swipe to turn pages I see far fewer missed turns, but still experience the odd freeze. I can tell the device is still alive as a push of the light switch does work. Normally after 30 seconds or so it recovers.

I have not had any problems with my Aura HD. My Kobo mini, lots of problems! It constant freezes and I have to reset it. Or it won't connect to wifi and I have to reset. I think it is a poor OS update for the mini

Hmm... I think it may be your expectations for timely replies, from people who actually have a life. It may be related to how you can't understand why no one is laughing at a totally brilliant joke. Or why so few can see the life changing impact of a post about page margins. What can these other people be doing that they do not instantly respond to my posts?? You got me, I have the same problem.

Luck;

I get double page turns from time to time on my aura as well, fw 3.1.1.

I wondered if I installed one of the alternative readers on my HD would it also occur with them. I guess it would show if it was the reader software fault or is it the software getting phantom clicks from the HW/OS.

It will hurt nothing to try them: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=226456

I can't remember getting a "double page" without a "double tap" in Koreader, with any of the recent builds.

While I don't have a capacitative touchscreen Kobo (I've got the Glo), I have quite some use of my Kobo with the latest firmware, and I haven't experienced anything the like of what you describe.

I think you may find that nobody replied because hardly anybody is experiencing what you describe. If you hadn't complained about nobody answering, I wouldn't have either since it doesn't really apply to me.

My Glo has been acting up lately. I've been getting sporadic backward page turns (when I tap for a forward page turn). I'm on an older firmware, and nothing has really changed. This is a new problem for me. I've had a problems with the occasional missed taps, but not page back or double page forward problems.

I haven't been on this forum in months, too busy reading I guess. I got the Aura HD last April/May. I get the odd, weirdly formatted forward page turn now and then, Where sometimes it jumps forward an extra page. I've had the weird backwards page turn, occasionally. I've had the weird summoning of the dictionary instead of turning the page, but not for a while. I've only had it freeze on me once. I'm usually so immersed in the reading experience that I don't notice most of the page turn issues. Even in a paper book, I occasionally misturn the pages. I just turn back to find the page I was on, and continue from there. The freezing would be a problem if it happened more than once. I haven't seen any consistency at all with these errors. Do I have any clue how to fix it? No. Does it bother me much? Nope, not enough to quit reading my book.

I have the same problem. I have to power off three or four times in the evening when reading. Last night the device paged but three chapters by
itself. I let it go just to see how far it would go back. Then I powered off came back to the chapter and then carefully tried to move forward but several times it flipped back pages. It was a book that I had bought off Kobo but I have had it happen with library books as well.

Since we both have AuraHDs and you seem to be having these problems and I don't, reading with Koreader, perhaps if you tried Koreader and see if the problem goes away; we might be able to see if it is a hardware problem or a Kobo software problem.

FWIW: I've got an Aura HD running 3.1.1 with some patches and I have no issues at all.

The - very - occasional double page turn I get is caused by reluctant tapping: by now I know it will be a double turn the moment I tap, before the page actually turns.

My Glo occasionally thinks I'm tapping on the wrong part of the screen, usually around the corners, like being unable to hit the menu button but sometimes going back a page instead of forward. It's usually because of dust/gunk around the screen bezel interfering with the IR touch sensor. Cleaning it out by running a tissue around inside the gap between screen and bezel and blowing on it usually fixes things.
