page turning problem
I received a Kobo Glow for Christmas and I'm finding a problem when I turn the page. The pages are white with black front, when I "turn" the page for a nano-second I see a black page with white font. This is extremely annoying. I've called the Kobo help line and they tell me that this is normal. Is this normal for the Kobo? I've had a Nook for years without this problem. I would appreciate feedback.
Thank you. |

The Kobo Aura does things slightly differently using eInk's Regal technology where they play with how the ink capsules are toggled between black and white to reduce ghosting and reduce the need for page refreshes. Regards, David |

I hated the e-ink inverted-flash at first, but was used to it by the time I finished my first book. I never notice it anymore, so long as I leave it set to refresh every turn; I think I've trained myself to blink at the right time during page-turning. If I try to set it to refresh every six page turns, not only does the ghosting bother me, but I actually notice the flash more.
Just try it for a while - it's very likely you'll adjust fast. (And what sort of Nook? All e-ink devices except for the very recent ones will do this flash regularly; it's built in to the tech.) |

That brief reverse flash is common of all e-ink screens. It's never bothered me, even on readers that would flash every page turn. It's certainly much less disruptive than turning a physical page of a paper book.
There is a way to manually set the Glo to flash as few as every 99 pages though in an file on the reader. There's a thread about it somewhere in this forum, but the file is located in .kobo\Kobo\Kobo eReader.conf, just open that file in any decent text editor like Notepad+ and change the number of page turns to whatever you want in the [Reading] section such as below: [Reading] numPartialUpdatePageTurns=50 Mine is set to flash every 50 page turns, others have set it to 99, and I honestly don't see any ghosting other than occasionally on the cover when it's put to sleep. And since I use a sleep cover where the book cover is visible for only a brief second before it switches on, that's not really a concern at all. My light is always at a constant 28% in case the light can make the ghosting appear more or less. If you see ghosting, try setting it lower to 25 or so and see how you like it. But the flash is just how e-ink screens work. Some readers have minimized it I think (maybe the Kobo Aura?) but it really doesn't bother me at all. |

Thanks everyone, I'll change my settings and hope that it will help. Meera asked what kind of Nook I have. It's the Nook Color, several years old and I have never noticed a invert flash when using it.

The Nook Colour is a tablet. Completely different screen tech. The reverse flash happens with e-ink screens.

Plug your Kobo into the USB port to your PC, and then look on the Kobo device in this location:
.kobo\Kobo\Kobo eReader.conf |

The flash being referred to is caused when the screen is written white/black/white to removeghosting -- on most Kobo ereaders, the default is every 6 pages (the Aura with it's Regal technology refreshes once per chapter by default). What I now think you are referring to is due simply to the slowness of the eInk display compared to an LCD display -- you can actually see the screen being rewritten. Regards, David |
