Unhappy no more /opt

I somehow managed with my stupidity to rm -r -f the /opt folder on the root of my kindle. Right now, it just seems to do nothing, it just shows "kindle" and the picture of the boy reading below the tree. I had installed the jailbreak before, but then left the kindle aside for a while, in the meanwhile it did some updates, then later I thought I'd use my kindle again. I installed the kindlet jailbreak, as the normal jailbreak was already on there, I had some outdated launcher, so I installed KUAL with lots of other stuff, including kterm. I wanted to try some stuff on my kindle, later I got ssh to use IRC on my homeserver, as I didn't know any IRC client on the kindle. Later, I found out about the optware package. I downloaded it, made myself a shrinked image right away and installed it and got it working after a while.
Due to some reason, I didn't ls in /opt/bin to see what was already there, so I tried installing gcc & libc-dev through ipkg. I didn't achieve installing gcc through ipkg, but I had managed installing libc-dev until I relalized gcc and g++ were already installed. I wanted to compile something, but it have me an uncommon error, so I thought the libc-dev I installed wasn't compatible with the already existing gcc.
That somehow lead me to thinking I messed up the loop file and wanted to reinstall it. I also stupidly thought /opt was entirely related to the loop file, even though there were some suspicious files. That lead to me deleting the opt folder, I then wanted to get a fresh loop file, I rebooted to be sure that everything'd work, yet now it clearly doesn't. I'm not stuck with something, that doesn't seem to be a bootloop, just a interrupted boot that causes my kindle to do nothing.
I also read about fastboot, I knew what fastboot could before I had my kindle, so I thought I'd reflash the system as I could do it with the androids.
I have found the images, yet I have no idea how to get my kindle into fastboot mode as I can't mount it on the PC to place a ENABLE_DIAGS file onto it. I'm not even sure if it still has diags mode, as it updated multiple times.
So I demand to you, the pros, how do I get that damn kindle into fastboot. I'd be grateful for any help...

Right now, it just looks like http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/..._5-430x500.jpg . I can hold the power button to restart it, yet that doesn't help a lot.

The dumb thing, I instantly knew what the dumb mistake I did was. I should've been more careful, I have no deep kindle hacking knowledge :/.

Btw, I'm not sure if this the correct place for help requests is. Sorry if I posted it into the wrong forum!

Sorry if anything is not clear, not sure how to explain

Sounds easy to explain: PEBKAC

From your post, that is probably a Kindle Paperwhite, Gen(1).

You "found the images" - ah - really ?
I don't think you want Fastboot.

You will need to use the u-boot BIST to get into Fastboot mode.
Which requires a serial port connection.
But once you have that serial port connection, you can fix it without using Fastboot.

If this is indeed a Kpw(1) - - then your goal is to put one of the Amazon complete images on the root of your USB storage area, then do an "update Kindle".

Yes, it is the first Paperwhite
I'm probably wrong with the fastboot part. I just knew fastboot could flash partition images and that it always worked for my android. I just want to get it working again...
I thought I could just reflash the image and that'd be it.

I thought the part responsible for mounting the partition to the USB was only loaded when fully booted; how'd I get the update.bin on there?

The K5 devices are "dual boot" machines.

From your post, you have only trashed one of the two systems.
Once the second ("Diags") system is "fully booted", you will find menu entries for this sort of thing.

You can "just reflash the image" - but since it is encoded and signed, best that you let the system updater routine do it for you.

Your first challenge will be to get the serial port adapter connected giving access to u-boot.

That will give you access to setting which system gets booted.
Similar to using the "ENABLE_DIAGS" flag filename.

Then once you have booted into "Diags" system, you will find menu entries that allow you to export user storage (so you can place Amazon image file there), and menu entries that will let you "update from user storage" (or words to that effect).

It doesn't show up as external storage on a win7 pc, it seems to just charge. I don't think it'll be different on my linux. I'll just check

I probably can't send it to repair either or get ir replaced by a new one whilst using the classic "ran out of power in update" :S And as I have jailbroken it, guarantee(/warranty/whatever the word is) is generally gone, right?
I just feel like I coud mess it up even more with such technical stuff (talking about uboot& serial port)...

hmm, I don't think it necessarily voids your warranty. Take a look at:
Amazon customer Service statement and here

good luck!

Just exchange it, it is still in warranty.

Amazon does not even see your unit before sending you the replacement.

And they don't have time, money or manpower to look at it after it comes back - it just goes into the "re-work" bin.

Unit is of so little value that the manpower cost just to try turning it on makes checking it a total loss.
