Lighted Kindle Cover!
I have a chance to buy 2 from a lady 1 she used asking $10. The other Brand New on box asking $20! I plan to buy Both! BUT!!!! I use to hear how they ruined Kindle Keyboards. I checked Amazon Reviews nothing I read says anything about them killing K3... SOO whats true ?? And did they fix them? How can I tell IF they are the Fixed ones or not?

I belive the problem is the UNLIGHTED version of that cover shorts the Kindle's cover light output if the hooks are the old black coated metal ones and are worn. Apparently older versions of it had the hooks mounted to the same metal plate in the spine without any electrical isolation (DOH!!!!) so when the black paint wore off the trouble started. The general consensus seems to be that removing the K3 from the offending cover and possibly rebooting as well resolves the problem.
The LIGHTED cover uses the two gold hooks as electrical contacts for the LED supply so they are seperate and unless its badly damaged, they wont short out the K3. I acquired one (used) just after Christmas and so far have had no issues whatsoever. There's just enough clearance for a thin silicone skin on the K3, but YMMV as a thicker, better quality skin certainly wouldn't fit without straining the hooks. More details of the problem in a Amazon forum topic [here]. |

I never had an issue with my Kindle Keyboard and lighted cover. It does add quite a bit of bulk to the Kindle.

That's a fantastic price for a lighted cover!
I had one of the troublesome unlighted covers. Unfortunately, Amazon did not offer to exchange the cover as it started acting up almost a year after I bought it. They offered to sell me a new-style cover for $5 less than the retail price, but I declined. I then bought some black fingernail polish and repainted the hooks to restore the insulation. No problems with the unlighted cover since then. |

Finally after midnight she answered me! We are meeting Monday Afternoon! The $10 one is 6 months old. The $20 one has never been used still in box. Some of the reviews on Amazon say they lights die at about 1 yr! So is there anyway to change bulbs? Or why do they die?

The light has three white LEDs in the head at the end of the arm so there's no bulb to replace. The LEDs only switch on when the arm is fully pulled out, so I suspect there are some spring contacts that connect when the arm is extended. Obviously an arrangement like that would be sensitive to dirt and contamination, which is the most probable cause of early failure. Try and keep your Kindle clean!

They can blow but generally last a very long time if the design is any good. The style of LED used in the Kindle cover is *NOT* user replaceable.
