Error communicating with device
Hi. I got an Amazon KIndle 4 about 1 week ago (i'm a newbie, some would say). Everything went fine until i got a virus (dxprdiag.vbs) which affects your usb flash drives (creating shortcuts instead of your original files). I've tried deleting those shortcuts, creating new folders having the same names as the original ones and containing the files that were initially there. But it didn't allow me to create the folder 'system', saying that there is already a folder 'system', and i was promted for 'merge files etc...' (although there wasn't such folder. I've checked hidden files too). I said I should give it a try and merge folders ( apparently) hoping i'll let create my 'system' folder i needed, but no result. It didn't rename my 'new folder'. I am using calibre. Re-running the welcome wizard or resetting my Kindle (holding down the power button for about 20sec) didn't work for me. I've searched if there's an option like formatting or smth to get my files back, but couldn't find anything. Besides, there were another files. Smth *.calibre (driveinfo.calibre, i guess) and some other file, which are gone now. I'm assuming that's why i get this error.
This is the message i get : << calibre, version 1.15.0 ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device Failed to access files in the main memory of your device. You should contact the device manufacturer for support. Common fixes are: try a different USB cable/USB port on your computer. If you device has a "Reset to factory defaults" type of setting somewhere, use it. Underlying error: [Errno 13] Permission denied: 'L:\\driveinfo.calibre' >> I'm still able to read, shop in Kindle, but i can't get it connected to my PC (and i really need to resolve it 'cause i have lots of books (my personal stuff, not only Amazon ebooks) i want to download via usb (and convert them). Can anyone tell me what to do ? ( I can give you the debug log too, in Calibre) |

The Permission Denied error implies that the driveinfo.calibre file or perhaps the entire drive is owned by a different user.
The first thing you should do is get rid of this virus. |

I did get rid of the virus. But now i can't get those files back (Driveinfo.calibre and the folders in the exact same way they were: system, documents,etc...). How can i do that ? It still doesn't let me create manually the folders (saying that there is already a folder *name), and i can't get that file *.calibre too. Not even reinstalling it (probably the exact same reason it won't let me create folders ). Some suggestions ?

And you can't see the files/folders? Did you check for hidden files?
Did you try resetting your Kindle? |

right now, there is a file 'DONT_HALT_ON_REPAIR', a folder 'document' and a folder 'sys' which i made it after the disinfection, and copied there the files from 'system' (the virus created shorcuts but when opening a specific shortcut, the only thing is that is being opened in a new window, but the files are still there). Afterward, i have deleted the 'system' folder and tried to rename my 'sys' folder into 'system' and i get that message 'merge files and folders....' . What should i do ? |

Solved. The virus was still there, or at least smth was hidding my files. I used Usbfix.

Everything works now? Good to hear.
Hmm. I'd meant at one point to suggest trying another computer for exactly that problem, but I forgot... |
