Question A little query about strange behaviour!

Hi everyone

This is just a quick query about some odd behavior that my Glo/Calibre is indulging itself in! It is not the end of the world but I am stumped/curious! (Doesn't take much!)

I have Calibre and sideload ALL my books after fiddling with the metadata and the covers etc. All has been well - until I entered 3 books by the same author into Calibre and transferred them to my Glo. They show up fine on my Glo - are readable etc. All present and correct!

And now here is the rub - when I plug the Glo back in to sync with Calibre the books are listed in Calibre but do NOT have the green tick besides them showing that they are in the main memory of my Glo!

The only difference to these books is that they have been personally signed by the author using Authorgraph and I used the EPub-merge plug in to add the signed page to the front of each book.

Any ideas? Davidfor?? *smiles winsomely*

Oh - I have the latest Firmware - 3.1.1 and the latest Calibre too!

When I would constantly have the problem of Calibre giving errors that it can't communicate with the Glo, that's when I'd have that same book behavior. Even though the identical book was on the Glo sent via Calibre, and there were no changes to the books on my PC, once I connected the Glo the majority of books on the Glo would look like they were not in my Calibre library (they didn't have the green check as being in the library).

Once I downgraded to 2.4.0 all my problems stopped. No more errors ever about not being able to communicate with the device, and there's no missing checkmarks for books listed on the Glo as if they're not in my library.

This seems to be an issue for users with WinXP and AMD cpus.

Are these books in a series, and do you have a plugboard that adds the series name to the title as the book is sent to the device? If so I think Calibre can have trouble matching the new title back to the original in some cases.

Hi Ratty Yes, they are a trilogy and yes, they do have the series title info sent to my Glo. So I deleted them from the Glo and Calibre and returned them to both and it looks OK and I have the green tick

Many thanks for your help - gave me a jumping off point

You might be best to wait for davidfor's advice, but if you could try editing the books' metadata in Calibre to add the series info to the titles exactly as they appear on the Glo, then connecting the Glo and see if it matches the books (green tick). If so then while the Glo is still attached, edit the books' metadata again to remove the series info, then hopefully they will stay matched whenever you connect again.

Edit: You got it working while I was typing this

Just for the record, the most common reason I have seen for this problem is multiple authors. The Kobo firmware doesn't handle the way calibre puts multiple authors into the books properly. Calibre correctly puts the authors in as one entry per author, but Kobo is only reading the first.

The series info is the next reason. Add in articles being put at the end of titles and series, and I'm always a little surprised that anything matches.

A little while ago, Kovid added a function to allow you to fix this. When on the device list, right click on an unmatched book and select "Match book to library". The dialog lets you search for the book in the calibre library to match the book on the device. Once you have found it, select the book in the list and press OK. Once you have matched all the books you need to, right-click on the device icon and select "Update cached metadata on device". This adds the match to the file on the device that calibre uses for matching all the books.
