PW2 collections issue / Kobo Aura?

Hi folks,

I own a Kindle Touch and always loved it.
Now I wanted to upgrade to a device with light.
I got a bit insecure, reading about issues with the new firmware 5.4.2 for PW2 and problems with collections.
I have a few purchased amazon books, and more sideloaded (via the kindle email-adress). I did store them in collections, but wouldn't have a problem rearranging them into collections of neccessary.

I didn't fully understand these issues with the new firmware: does the pw2 case problems with sideloaded books? Or are they not stored in the cloud and synced anymore?

On another hand: I was considering the Kobo Aura, since I imagine that I can use dropbox to keep the books and highlights in sync, and read across multiple devices using dropbox. Is that correct, or do I imagine it too easy?

Sideloaded books have never been stored in the Cloud. That's what "sideloaded" means.

I have a Paperwhite 1 not a 2 but I don't think the 2 treats books you send to kindle any differently. The side loaded books you send to Amazon are treated by Amazon and the Kindle as if they were Amazon books and are stored in the Cloud. The only difference is they are Personal Documents not Books. They still sync as they always did.

I have a Kobo Aura, I load my books via Calibre into Collections (Calibre has a plug in that's works great for this). I also load the odd book via Dropbox using the browser and that also works fine.

The screen on the Paperwhite is slightly better that the Aura's but I do love my Aura.

Harry the OP uses the 'kindle email address' for 'side loaded' books so I assume they are emailed to Amazon in which case they are they will be stored in the Cloud.

That's what I do. I never load my Paperwhite via Calibre or by drag and drop, I always email my books to Amazon, it's easier that way.

In that case, the books are not side-loaded. Side-loaded means "transferred via USB".

I know, it's a terminology thing. Even I use the word 'sideload' to mean anything not purchased from Amazon.

We need to come up with a word for 'I bought it from somewhere else and emailed it to Amazon'

The only important thing for me is that the all the highlights that I put get synced all across my devices, and that I can export them (f.ex. to Evernote via clippings manager).

How is it with the Aura and syncing of highlights and annotations via dropbox? Does it work well, or is it complicated?

Well, if you download a book from a web site to your kindle it behaves exactly the same as if it were transferred over the USB cable. I would consider those 'side loaded' as well.

I can't help with highlighting I'm afraid, I only download a book from Dropbox to the Aura.

In the meantime, I got the Kindle for Android app running on my mac with the emulator "Genymotion". Thus, I have personal documents and whispersync on my mac.

I have Aura HD and Kindles 3, PW1 and PW2. I don't sync highlights but I still don't understand how highlighting works on Aura. On Kindles I can highlight several pages if I want to. On Aura HD I still haven't managed to highlight a sentence which starts on one page and ends on another, which is very irritating. You might want to check this and other bugs in Kobo forums before you decide on purchasing Kobo.
