E-reader without activation and/or account!?
I'm interested in the Kindle Paperwhite 2 but I've read somewhere that Amazon asks you to register the device as soon as you first turn it on? I don't want to register my device nor create an account for it.
- 6" e-ink - touch screen - front lit - no activation - no account - sideloading books via Calibre and/or drag and drop via USB - mac compatible Any suggestions? |

As far as I know, PocketBook ereaders would fit your requirements.

AFAIK Pocketbook, Onyx Boox & Bookeen don't have these requirements.

I had a PW1 and never registered it with Amazon. The downsides were that Collections weren't available, other than jailbreaking and adding a patch (and it still doesn't copy your collections automatically from Calibre as other readers do), and the fact that the clock doesn't keep good time unless occasionally connected to Amazon's servers. I use a Mac and side load via Calibre and USB.
After 10 months I was happy to buy my Kobo Aura and escape from Amazon. Yes, you have to register, but I use an email address from many years ago that I never use and never connect to the Kobo store, so it doesn't bother me. I now have full Calibre compatibility again and am very pleased to have my collections on my device without having to remember to do other manual steps in between. |

Kobo, and Nook refuse to talk to you after unpacking unless you register. You can register with a name you will never ever use again. Kindle asks you to register it, but you can use it withou registering. It will just constantly nag you and you will not be able to use some functionality (collections). There is also Bookeen device with a front-lit display but I do hot know whether you have to activate or register it. Cybook Odyssey FrontLight and Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight. You might want to ask at their forum. I haven't registered my PocketBook 623 yet and I have been using it happily for quite a long time. |

Check the Kobo forums if you're interested in their devices - there is a hack to use the device without registering. (And a heap of other hacks).
