Cover not dowloading to KOBO reader
Hi,
I have generated a "default" cover for the book using Calibre. This shows fine in the Calibre library on the PC. However, when I transfer the book to KOBO Aura or KOBO Touch the cover does not appear. Any suggestions? Thanks divoch |

What does appear on the devices as the cover?
As a general rule, the Kobo devices use the first page of the book as the cover. If you open the book on the device and the cover should match the first page. It is different for kepubs. For epubs, calibre attempts to update the cover in the book as it is sent. This only works if calibre can work out what the cover image is. If you have set the cover in the library, but have not done a conversion or use Polish books to update the actual book, this might be the problem. |

The ebok was originally free .pdf in Czech language and did not have cover. I converted it to epub first and then created a default cover using Calibre. This cover appears in the Calibre library but when I click on it it opens the book on the first page which is blank.
When I transfer the book to KOBO it is without cover and opens on the first page which is blank. Looking at it now I notice that the cover I created is a separate .jpg file and is not integrated into the book itself - and I am not sure how to do that. The book is held in the Calibre library in the folder named Bila Nemoc . In that folder there are three files: Bila nemoc - Karel Capek.epub , cover.jpg and metadata.opf. When I click directly on the file Bila nemoc -Karel Capek.epub then the book opens on the first page which is blank and this is presumeably what is transfered to KOBO reader. That all makes sense. Because the book doesn't have a cover, calibre can't update it during the send. Calibre also doesn't modify the book when you change the metadata or cover in the library. It only does this when you send the book outside the library or use a function that specifically does this.
There are three ways within calibre to add or replace the cover: - The Modify ePub plugin has an option to insert or replace the cover. - The Polish Books function in calibre will also do it. - A conversion from epub to epub. The default options should add the cover as the first page. I tend to use Modify ePub, but that is mainly because it has been around a lot longer than Polish Books. You can also get the cover to the Kobo ereader with my utilities plugin. It has an option where you select the book in the calibre library and it will generate the cover images on the device. Sometimes this doesn't look like it worked as the device caches a few cover images in memory. Restarting the device will fix this. |

After reading some further notes on plugins I managed to install Modify ePub plugin and insert the cover. However I cannot see how I could have done that without having your help for which I thank you.
