Unhappy New firmware woes...

Hi. I'm new to this forum, in fact to any forum, so please slap me if I'm in the wrong place or doing it wrong..
Up to last week I was a fairly happy Kobo glo reader. I needed a new tablet, so I decided to buy the Kobo Arc10HD, so I could use it as a reader and for general tablet type things. coincidently, my Glo updated itself the same day. Now I'm not happy anymore. All the shelves I had created on the Glo are now called collections, and the series information has now disappeared. Much the same on the Arc.
Has anyone any idea if the series info can be restored?

I think you have to use Calibre to restore the series. But I could be wrong. Yes the Collections are a small annoyance, But the Series info I think changed a few firmwares ago, and I think Calibre can fix this for you and manage your Shelves (collections sorry) for you as well.

calibre will transfer the series info on the next sync AFTER the book(s) have been transferred (as long as metadata management is set to auto).

The other common approacs are to
  1. use a plugboard within calibre to "massage" the book's title to include the series info before the real title; this way material sorts easily into series sequence.
  2. use calibre to place each series into a collection named for the series.

The plugboard approach worked a treat. That's the Glo sorted. The Arc is another matter. Needs a bit more investigation Thanks again...

Are your books kepub or epub? If the latter and you have full access to the Google Play Store then the Calibre Companion app is worth a look. It brings your calibre metadata wirelessly to the android tablet for very nice library management. The actual reading is done via the epub reading app of your choice after selecting the book within Calibre Companion. But, as I said, I don't think it will handle 'proper kepubs', i.e. those bought from Kobo and managed by the Kobo servers. I'm not sure about 'pseudo kepubs', i.e. those created within calibre.

Thanks, I will certainly give that a try. I was hoping the Arc would sync with the Glo (with side loaded EPUBs) but this isn't happening. All the collections on the Glo appear on the Arc, but with no content. If the books are added manually they disappear after a while. It's a shame really as I'm enjoying reading on the Arc, but it is a pain when the reading position doesn't synchronise. I should have stayed with the Kindle I guess...

I'll add (slightly) to the woes:

I have to sync daily to get my newspaper subscription. EVERY DAY since the new firmware, I get a tile re-added to my homescreen:

"Get started; Add a book to your Library"

Grrrrrr...

You will also have kobo notifications turned on, when you sync, and its done regardless of what you wish for! I guess they want to push selling books as much as reading them, But I prefer to do my purchasing from the computer where I can access things at desktop speeds in colour!

I saw this initially when I installed it as a beta version, but it went away after a short period of time (not sure what I did to stop it specifically). Have you tried opening the "Get started" tile rather than just dismissing it? It could be that a flag didn't get set properly that you've been through it so it keeps coming back and maybe opening it will set the flag properly.
