Loss of personalized metadata
Years ago I set up some of my own metadata columns to keep record of author nationalities, awards won etc. Today that metadata seems to be missing. Any idea how I can get it back?

Missing or not showing?
Gone is pretty much gone (there is a very slim chance some may have made it into the book, but only in certain cases)

Then it is GONE.

Somewhere you probably rebuilt your library from the Books and they had not been updated by any of the methods available.

If the OLD (with metadata) copy is on the device, you might recover those

The obvious answer would be from your backup.

On any computer system there are 3 major components that can fail, hardware, software and operator. If you don't maintain adequate backup of your data, and test associated recovery processes then you're exposed to the risk of failure of any one or all three of them.

I would encourage you to consider investing some time, and perhaps a bit of money in implementing a coherent backup/recovery regime for all of your data - emails, correspondence, financial documents, photos, music, videos, and of course ebooks.

If you have a backup , even partial, you could use the find duplicates plugin to add the books that are not in the backup. The find library duplicates will give you a list of duplicates and typing not in front of it will show you the books that only exist in the source library.

I am a paranoid backer upper so I would back up both before starting.

If no backup it won't take you as long the second time around.

Thank you for your help. I do back up, but not as fastidiously as you Speakingtohe. I really didn't want to spend hours figuring out what I had lost from my last backup.

It took a bit of time, but it's all there now.
