Protecting metadata/books
Hi,
I'm looking for a way to proctect the metadata in my Calibre libraries (per book individually). I searched this forum and the manual but could not find it. Is there a solution? This has nothing to do with DRM protecting books; I just want to be able to protect all the entered metadata; make it "read-only". It would even be nice to be able to mark a book as "read-only" so that it could not be deleted, edited etc... Kind regards, |

If you have the original file tweak set to true calibre will keep the original file in a conversion to the same format. Once it is created it won't be overwritten or deleted unless you do it deliberately.
You can also make each book read-only using your OS. Still no totally foolproof method. A reliable backup is still the best. Helen |

@Enesco - if you're trying to prevent yourself making the changes then that may be hard.
Imagine I have a Tag - "Crime" and another Tag - "Criminals". Now I decide I don't really need "Criminals". To merge the two I would right click "Criminals" in the Tag Browser and rename it to "Crime". So what should happen to the 'read only' books tagged with "Criminals"? Should the 'read only' flag be ignored, should the rename be rejected, should I get a list of the 'read only' books and the opportunity to proceed or cancel the rename etc? There are other changes that ripple through the book metadata - eg a change to the Author Link will change the metadata in all of that Authors books. Its a 'nice' idea, but it could be fraught with difficulties - but only Kovid can give a definitive answer. You could put the 'read only' books into a virtual library, and/or use the column icon feature (preferences->look and feel) to display a Red Flag on read only books. BR |

Hi,
Thanks! I have a daily backup system, but they could easily be corrupted too... @BetterRed: I understand your objections... I'm trying the column icon feature now. Michel |
